Hi folks, Just got my carby 900ss back on the road and have been plagued by a spate of main fuse failures followed by fuel starvation problems. Also, fuel pump very quiet and not much fuel returning to the tank so fairly certain that the fuel pump is shagged. I'm pretty sure that I've read about people using a car fuel pump as a better/cheaper alternative to the OEM pump but can't recall which one. Does anyone on here know the make/model/part number? Also planning to seal my tank and fit an external filter at the same time. Many thanks in advance. WW
If you go on the FuelPumpsOnline website, you might be able to identify a similar pump - and if you phone them, there is a very helpful female person who may be able to takes some details to spot the right one...... ..........alternatively, you could fit an external pump as well as the external filter/s.........The Facet Solid State 1 - 4psi is the one I think should be used and they cost less than £30............I shall do it when my pump fails, so I have worked out what is needed and where to mount it..... AL
had a similar issue to your experience, main 30A fuse kept failing, eventually traced fault to the fuel pump wire on the inside of the tank, the insulation had worn through and it was shorting against the tank!!
Just a quick update. Sorry it's been a while but work and life are coming between me and my bikes at the moment. Al, I followed your advice and bought one of the fuel pumps that you recommended. Next step is to get it rigged up and see if it solves the problem. I'm hoping to catch a bit of garage time next week so I'll let you know how I get on.
I would use the pump mounting bracket that is available specifically for the pump and then mount the pump on the 'web strap' in the frame where the full fairing rear mounting tube is............That way it will get cool air directed on to it while it is at the right level to get the initial gravity feed from the tank. I would also use an external filter before the pump.....but it might be worth having a small one after the pump as well (just in case the pump has floaty bits that wear off it)...... Leave the return flow hose in place. One thing I haven't had time to work out is whether the pump is 'open' when the ignition is off........so it might be necessary to wire one of these in as well Petrol solenoid shut cut off valve 12V,LPG conversions, liquid, air, anti theft | eBay Both the pump and the valve can be wired using the original pump wiring. Taking it to the extreme, remove the petcock / fuel tap and plug the hole; then remove the fuel level sender completely and use one of the nuts that final edition has made For Sale - Uprated Fuel Level Sender Nuts | Ducati Forum and the insert he mentions..........that way you can drill and tap the insert to take a suitable petrol tap with open, off and reserve position..........There's more room to fit one on the left side of the tank.
