Cat Glowing Red

  1. Can anyone help me. The cat on my multistrada is glowing red after a while. I've been told it might be the lambda sensors which I have changed, but still glows red. Someone else said it might be the water temperature sensor, I have got a new one to fit. In case this doesn't work does anyone else have any idea what it might be ???? Many thanks in anticipation

  3. Most likely the cat is running hot because it's burning off excess fuel. This could certainly be caused by a faulty water temperature sensor.

  4. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond. Hopefully tomorrow when I replace water temperature sensor all will be ok. Fingers crossed

  5. Take a photo without a flash & show it us

  6. I was expecting something very different when I read the title, I'm a bit disappointed.

  8. I suggest your first point of call should be an authorised Ducati workshop or known specialist. It sounds like the engine is running very lean. Andy

  9. Be disappointed no more :)

  10. Threads merged btw

  11. High exhausts temps , very lean or retarded ignition timing .

How does the bike feel / ride on the road

  12. High exhaust temp, but bike sounds and runs fine. Can't ride bike as after 5mins the cat is glowing red. I am going to change the water temperature sensor tomorrow so hopefully that sorts the problem.

  13. What is the running temperature on the dash ? Andy

  14. I thought that is the idea of a cat , it glows as it runs so hot to burn off any access fuel or contaminants not because of them. If I ran my old 1098 in the evening it glowed and there was bugger all wrong with it in fact it ran in the ulster gp with standard engine and exhaust.

  15. That's exactly what they do. I got the impression from the OP that it was running excessively hot, but maybe not. It may simply be his perception of how hot it is.
There was a 848 mentioned in DuN recently that had run the exhaust extremely hot to the point that it melted the number plate holder, the tail light and the wiring too it. Now that was excessively hot and almost certainly down to a fuelling problem.

  16. If you run your bike in the evening or dark garage and when warm you should be able to look down exhaust ( 848/1098/1198 ) and see the cat glowing red. If not either it's been decated , running ,race cans or there is something badly wrong.

  17. Tonight we started the bike , ran for 5mins approx temp went up to 45deg then we noticed cat starting to glow. Not the whole cat just in one spot

  18. Bike did pop a little bit, took one spark plug out and that was blackened

  19. Sounds more rich than lean. Excess fuel should not be hitting the cat, that is the whole point of the Lamda sensors to ensure there is some excess O2 in the exhaust, i.e. all of the fuel is burnt in the engine and not the cat.

  20. Any idea what the cause could be ??
