Hi, it's a question to the bike instructors / examiners out there please! A friend of mine passed his CBT in June 11, with a view to getting his full licence. He hasn't as yet got the first / next test. I'm not sure but I have an idea that as his CBT is valid for two years, then can he immediately take another? I have a vague recollection that when I did mine (1992) if you didn't pass your test in 24 months you had an enforced 12 months off bikes - as a incentive to get people doing more training and not just riding on L plates for ever and a day. Was it my CBT or the provisional part of my licence that brought this? If it is relevant he passed his car test in 1992/93. Is this just me being confused or making up twaddle and recalling it as a fact?!? thanks folks! ian.
In 99% sure the CBT is only valid for two years allowing the rider to use a bike upto 33bhp (usually upto a 125 inc scooters, but there are some new 250's that fit the bill) on L plates, once the CBT has expired, they have to take a retest, which is pretty much just riding around for an hour with an instructor making sure that the rider can control the bike. Im assuming the new rider is over 20 as well as there are now new limits in place to stop young riders passing a direct access and then jumping on a Hyperbike. If he doesnt take the full test he wont be banned for 12 months, only until he's retaken the CBT. Hope that helps
Cbt still only lasts for two years, however as mentioned it's no great hardship to resit. I had a feeling you didn't need to take cbt if you had a car license, but I've just checked and that is only in the case of riding mopeds, for anything bigger you need the cbt.
