Hi Everyone, I’m having a terrible time trying to find a chain and sprocket kit for my 1200 Multistrada. You see I want a 42T rear and I believe a carrier for it. Then, I think, a 110 link chain as well as standard front 15T sprog git. Does anyone know of a company that can sell these things? I’m pretty sure the things I want exist…although the more I search the more I feel I’ve been mislead by various YouTube channels. I’m going to try and piss in the kings pocket later (maybe easier than trying to get a kit for the bike)
The hardest thing to find is a 42t rear sprocket. There are a few on here https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_...at=0&rt=nc&Compatible%20Year=2014&_dcat=49831 Chain is easy - probably the best is the DID ZVMX Front 15t sprockets also easy to find.
Went with a change to the front sprocket on my 1260 due to lack of availability of 42T rear sprockets a couple of years ago. No regrets on that decision. Used a 40T rear with a JT carrier in combination with a 14T front.
Thank you both for your answers but alas not helpful on this occasion. The EBay link just went to an EBay home page and I can’t go to a smaller front because of the damage it does to the swingarm when chain is slack. I think I’ll probably have to go with standard sizes pretty soon because I’ve got trip booked soon and my chains knackered. Would be nice to use 6th gear though
I’ve planning to go to 14t on the front when I do mine later this year. It does seem like it’s a bit too long geared - I keep it in 2nd at 30mph and at 70mph it’s okay in 6th but I don’t feel that gear is any use at any speed below that and even then I suspect it might be labouring a bit.
If the chain has been correctly shortened to compensate and properly tensioned then why would it be slack? Why would this damage the swingarm?
I had the same dilemma recently. Ended up going 14 front and 40 rear……Fantastic! Keep it properly tensioned and all will be grand.
@Twinlover i imagine this has made it accelerate wonderfully! I’m still deciding how much to reduce mine by when the time comes. What is it like at 70 with your sprockets? I do a decent amount of motorway cruising and I’m looking to get it happy in the 65-75 range. As standard, is fine at 70 when it’s level, but up to that I’m in fifth, and I need to drop down to fifth when there’s anything more than a gentle incline to keep ot happy.
It has transformed the bike totally. Right throughout the rev range it is greatly improved. The flat spot is still there, but slightly less noticeable. I will get it remapped at some point. At 70mph, it is spot on.
Have a look at Gearing Commander, useful to see the difference between different setups. On my 1260 40/14 works well for me. Only slightly shorter than 42/15. At the time I did mine the only options to go to 42/15 was to convert to 525 or buy a kit from Caropimoto in Italy. It looks like they no longer do the kits but they do still sell the sprocket. It's not a carrier type but similar in design to OEM. Of course there will still be shipping, VAT and import duty to pay on that. I went with the carrier option for a couple of reasons; got a new one off of ebay for a bargain price as well as easy/cheaper changes going forward.
If you can fit a sprocket carrier, biketorqueracing can order the AFAM steel sprockets in on demand. I recently picked up a JT carrier, sprocket and DID chain package for less than an OEM set, so seemed logical to switch. DucatiMondo have a 530 42 tooth OEM style in stock. I didn't need a 110 chain as with the eccentric at it's shortest postion the 108 length would fit at 42 sprocket.
So are you saying that they got in an AFAM 42T sprocket that fitted your JT carrier? The pictures (outline drawings) of the AFAM carrier sprockets I've seen seem to be a different fit, maybe proprietary AFAM carrier. Could be just a bad drawing... Interesting that they seem to carry the ESJOT 42T sprocket, pricey though.
I went from standard to 42 tooth, with 525 conversion, a few months back to see what all the "best thing I've ever done to my Multi" comments were about, I had no issue with the standard gearing but thought I'd test it out. I'll be going back to 40 tooth when I've worn this chain out, I miss the never ending 3rd gear. Yes it's better in town but I try to keep out of those places. 2300 miles around Spain and Pyrenees last week so I've tested the gearing, it's just not for me.
I converted my 1200 to JT+AFAM 525 but my 1260 just went to JT 530. Visually they look identical to the renthal set I have too. But I can confirm that the AFAM steel quick change sprockets fit the JT carrier exactly the same as a JT sprocket. Cutout and bolt pattern is identical.
Thank you, useful information for next time around How did you find the 525 setup for durability and which front sprocket did you use? Assume you lengthened the chain by two links as well when going from 40T to 42T?
Esjot in Germany make a 42T rear sprocket which fits the 1200 OEM sprocket carrier/rear wheel. You’d just have to find a UK reseller or pay the duty/vat on self importing. Oh, and if fitting an extra 2 teeth at the rear go to a 110link chain.
@messes link above for DucatiMondo shows that they stock the ESJOT 42T sprocket, albeit for £120, nigh on the cost of the OEM 40T version. Good that there's a UK supplier as the main alternative, as far as I'm aware, is Carpimoto in Italy and all the post Brexit vagaries of ordering from Europe.
