  1. Any recommendations? One of those things that I never bought as had a awesome long standing neighbour who obliged. Unfortunately he passed away so about time I invested in my own.
So after something that reliable, well made, handles 530 chains (with or without grinding) and available in the UK. Happy to spend a little more if it means longevity. Appreciate input from those that have one, thanks.

  2. Use a dremel to grind down the pins before you use the braker. Will make your life and the breakers easier. So invest in a dremel too. I bought one of these 20 yrs ago. Still going strong but you deffo need a dremel to back it up.

  3. +1 for grinding off the riveted ends of the pins on the link that you remove, but I have done that with nothing more than an old electric drill with a small grinding wheel (much as I would like a Dremel!).

You might want to defer making a decision on the riveting tool until you have selected a new chain and looked at manufacturer recommendations. I am sure I saw details a while ago of some type of chain (maybe RK or Regina?) for which the joining link was supplied with some special use-once rivetting arrangement requiring nothing more than spanners.

If you buy a DID chain you could consider what DID have to say about the subject; their tool looks like this (and costs a fortune): D.I.D. Racing Chains and DirtStar® Rims

But there are many clones of the DID tool available, including this: Bike-It Heavy Duty Chain Vice Chain Cutter/Riveter - Demon Tweeks

  4. If you want to afford it the DID tool comes in DIY and professional grade and I can highly recommend it. Robust and simple. Andy

  5. Thanks all. I tend to favour DID chains so looks like I have my answer. ;)
