1200 Chain/sprockets Recommendation?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Ethel the Aardvark, Apr 28, 2023.

  1. Anyone got useful opinions on the best to go for (2010 1200S)? I'm currently running an utterly crap JT chain supplied and fitted by a well-known Scottish main dealer - the first one lasted 2500 miles. JT claimed it was a manufacturing defect and replaced it. The second one has gone the same way and, I suspect has taken out the sprockets.

So, suggestions for make and source for both chain and sprox? I've had good experiences with DID in the past and poor experience with Regina.

  2. DID chain good, JT sprockets good.

  3. I agree. On my 1260s Multistrada I went with DID x-ring Gold chain along with a JT carrier and rear sprocket. On the front I used a Esjot sprocket as they're also decent quality and we're available at the time.

The carrier and rear sprocket set-up is more expensive the first time around, though I got lucky and purchased my carrier as 2nd hand yet brand-new on eBay. Subsequently replacement rears are cheaper, the carrier will take other makes of carrier sprockets too, such as Renthal.

You might want to consider going up 2 teeth on the rear sprocket, or down one on the front. Many find the Multistrada geared rather 'lazily' and this peps things up a bit rasing the gearing. Went down one on the front on mine and am happy with the result. If increasing teeth on the rear you'll need to use a longer chain, +two links IIRC. Plenty of info on this on the forum.

  4. Thanks - I’m already running a 42 Supersprox on the back, but they’re unobtainable at the moment. Will go for the DID though

  5. DID or EK are the best. Go with steel sprockets. Clean your chain after each ride day and you'll get 30,000 kms.

  6. I’ve always had good experience with DID. I clean every ride and use a Scottoiler, but the JT chains are made of cheese - worse than Regina.

  7. @Ethel the Aardvark there are a few available on ebay, but from Germany

  8. Yup. Regina are OEM and they're crap. I had a gearing change done at the first 600 miles service. Best decision I've done.
Why endure 15,000 kms with the stock gearing?
I have: 42T ESJOT steel sprocket and DID chain.

  9. I'm with him :upyeah:. Same set up, just fitted and it is a much nicer bike to ride.

  10. Looking at this set up too, has anyone used the Rubber cushioned front sprocket, or would you just stick with standard?. Thanks

  11. Anyone got a link for a good kit in UK to avoid taxes? Dont mind 14/40 or 15/42
