I have just picked up a brand new DAIR multistrada and after a couple of hundred miles the chain looks very slack. Checked the tool kit and while there are tools for adjusting the chain there is no chain tension guide clip to measure against. Is mine missing or is it no longer supplied and is now an extra? Thank you as always Paul
If you have a ruler which can measure 38mm - 40mm, you can manage without the special tool. But more to the point, on a new bike the chain really should not need adjusting after 200 miles - unless there is something wrong.
I thought a new chain beds in after a hundred miles or so, then give it its first adjustment, and it won't need adjusting for quite a few hundred or thousand miles now.
On a new bike, there will be a first service due at 600 miles, and the chain might need a slight adjustment then. If it is so slack at 200 miles that it needs adjustment which won't wait until 600, that suggests a problem. By the way, a correctly adjusted chain according to the book can look rather slack to a superficial glance, depending on the suspension settings, so it can be a little misleading.
Yes it should be in the tool kit. Get your dealer to supply one. It's only a little piece of bent tin.
Hi guys, I'm a bit late on this conversation, I to didn't get the measuring tool, I may have a slack chain I'm going to work out how to do it with a ruler. Multistrada 1200 S 2015 any ideas?
Make sure the chain is well lubricated. Set the mode to urban and the preload to solo. Park the bike on its sidestand. Press down the lower run of the chain with your finger, then release it. Measure with a ruler the distance between the bottom surface of the swinging arm (i.e. the aluminium casting, not the plastic chain guide) and the middle of the pins of the chain. The measurement should show 38 mm to 40 mm. If the measurement is over 40 mm, the chain is a bit slack. Note that if the chain is only at 41 or 42 mm, a tiny adjustment will soon make the chain too tight, so go very gently with the adjustments.
