Chain wear

  1. Does anyone have any views on replacement chains?
And what sort of mileage are people getting from the original?
Mine has no adjustment left at 6,200 miles, covered since taking delivery on April 20.

  2. Doesn't sound very good to me! Am no expert but sure a chain should last a lot longer than that.

  3. The suspension travel is really long on the MTS. I sold my Speed Triple at 18,000 miles and the chain wasn't worn out. But it's suspension was very firm and I never rode two-up.

I am annoyed though because I've adjusted it regularly and have a Scottoiler fitted. Neither of which was the case with the ST, which had its chain adjusted only at service intervals.

Does anyone have any view on which chains are best these days?

  4. Had 13 k on mine still loads of life left, mind you I have a Scottoiler.

  5. It could also be down, a little, to riding style as well ST.
But mine seems to be like knicker elastic compared to my VFR chain.

  6. Currently done just under 4k and only one adjustment by the dealer and plenty of life in mine.

  7. Money no object I would opt for an AFAM chain and sprocket kit, top quality. A little more affordable is the Renthal/Tsubaki kits which I've also been very impressed with. Should get a damn sight more than 6.2k out of either option

  8. Seems a little premature that the chains gone already !!

I would be running mine back into the dealer with that sort of
    Mileage !!

  9. Well mine has 6600 on it including 2500 miles fully loaded and 2 up around the Alps and Ive adjusted it either 2 or 3 times now.

  10. Should be more like 18,000 or 20,000 miles pretty hard use. 6k is just ridiculous, there must be something wrong.

  11. That doesn't sound great, I never adjusted the chain on my Multi; left it to the dealer during its servicing and warranty returns. Did 15000 miles and the chain was still good when I chopped the bike in for a Speed Triple.

  12. Mines at 17k and a bit baggy at the moment, but hoping it will nip up for another 2-3 k miles?

  13. Mine has 4,500 miles/10 months, no adjustment has been required outside of dealer visits, I did check about a month ago. I like to think I am quite a smooth rider but I am fairly sure I don't ride like a girl.
I never oil it myself, I thought o ring chains were sealed? It does look a little rusty though.
It is going to last way over 6,000 miles.

  14. Thanks for the views. All very useful. Might take a trip back to the dealer. The original Scorps shredded in 3,000 miles too though. Expecting the replacement PR3s to last longer though as the novelty of a useable 150bhp wears off!

  15. Mines needs replacing after 16k

  16. Speed Triple my O/E set lasted 14,000 with an eOiler fitted from point of sale (11 plate). Now have Afam set on so will see how that goes. Purchased the C Spanner plus and a Teng Tong torque thing in anticipation of my first adjustment.

  17. ~17k miles for my chain.

It had been fine, not needing adjusting at all until the last trip, and then it needed doing mid trip, and was clattering on the cat by the time we got home.
I have fitted an OE chain & sprocket kit. The chain is a DiD. They said it was an X ring, but it isn't.

I used a scott oiler on my ST4S but got fed up with the mess. Chains still didn't last much beyond 17k anyway.

STriple, be interested to hear how you get on with tyre life on the PR3s.
I got around 3k (maybe a bit more but not much) out of the scorps, and get LESS out of the PR3s.

  18. Less than 3k out of PR3s! Wow.Do you do track days?

I used to get 8k (rear) and 10k (front) on my ST out of them and they have done 3k (2,600 two up with luggage on very hot roads over a two-week period) on the MTS with minimal wear.

I have to say that the PR3s don't feel quite as good on the MTS as they did on the ST. Traction control has kicked in a couple of times when I've been cranked over.

I would be happy with 17k out of a chain ... and I'm using a Scottoiler.

  19. Nope, I just enjoy my bike for what it was designed for

I don't even get 8k out of a front - its usually done in about 5k5 to 6k.

To be fair I do a lot of two up riding, but ride at the same pace as my solo mates (unless I get bored, in which case I go faster than them ). I like to make progress whenever possible, and enjoy braking for and accelerating out of bends on technical roads. We rarely do Nationals, and dont do autoroutes unless its an emergency. we still average 50mph though even on this smaller stuff.

A little anecdote. On my recent trip to Germany in June, when my tyre was less than optimal (i.e. had bugger all tread) I was experiencing vibration through the pegs, but only above 125 when cranked over in right handers
I set off from home with 1k miles on the rear tyre, which was a sensible ride to wales and back, so not pushing it. 3 days into the trip and I had almost zero tread left on the middle, and hardly all on the sides, so we had a scenic ride (260 miles) to Colmar on the 4th day for me to get some new boots. That was with around 2500 miles on the rear.
The Scorps in similar riding would have seen at least 3k miles.

Riding two up at brisk pace certainly canes the tyres and chain. (we have two unofficial higher levels than brisk: 'continental' - all posted speeds but in mph , and 'ave it' - speaks for itself  )
This last trip consisted of continental when the wife was aboard, and ave-it when I was solo.

Two weeks time and we are off ro another 4 days of tyre shredding. Cant wait !

P.s. Anyone out there fancy sponsoring me for tyres ?!?!?

  20. My chain was changed at the last service - 20k miles.

It gets lubed out of a can when it look as if it needs it (quite often and always after riding through rain). It only get adjusted at service intervals. I ride the 999 pretty much as I suspect they are meant to be ridden without going mental, and no, it hasn't done any track days.

I'd be pretty miffed if I was only getting a third of this chain life. Interesting to see that the Scott Oiler doesn't really seem to do anything that a decent chain lube does and is just something else to worry about (is it working? Is it going to dump all over my rear tyre?)
