Changing Mirrors On A 796 Hyper

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by CamBJones, Mar 12, 2015.

  1. I'm keen to change my flappy mirrors for traditional ones and remove the hand guards on my 796 because I commute thought central London each day and I've found I have my mirrors folded in all the time.

Seems a common mod however I've not been able to find any pics of people doing it on a 2012 796 like mine (See handle bar pics below).

I'm planing on removing the hand guards too to make it easier to filter so I need mirrors with LEDs, I think.

These seem to be the best options

    Expensive
Custom Universal Mirrors by Rizoma Bikes Accessories -

    or
Cheaper (and I think official Ducati products?)
    eMoto - Ducati Hypermotard Mirrors

However I've mainly seen them installed on bikes with these handle bars. Note the brake and clutch fluid reservoirs

But mine has handle bars like these... not the different brake and clutch fluid reservoirs.

I think this means there is less room to attached rearview mirrors to the handle bars. And I've not found pics of any bikes with these handle bars with tradition LED mirrors attached.

Hold that thought, I've just found the following.. although they are not LED versions
    [IMG]

And looks like he's attached them to the brake/clutch lever hole.

    Anyone else done this??
This chap did not get the LED mirrors but installed his own turn signals

  2. I have basiclly reversed what you have done. My indicators were in the mirrors and were fitted to the clamps that hold the levers on. the clamps are available off ebay for a few quid and there is loads of choice of mirrors with indicators in them. Your hand guards with mirrors built in are worth a small fortune. I paid 300 for mine used. they cost nearly 500 new. i would be tempted to stash them away as i can see them getting very rare in the future.

  3. Thanks for the reply Shed71! Actually I've not done mine yet and was looking for advice from anyone who had done it on a 796 with the black brake and clutch fluid reservoirs (like the second bike pics) where it looks like they are attached to the brake levers as you say.

So you's was like that then? So do I need to buy some additional clamp that goes in the brake lever hole? That hole does not look threaded.

Do you have any pics of yours before you reversed it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Cheers.

Google mirrors for Aprilia tuono or Shiver with 10 mm diameter thread , some are plain mirrors with no indicators in , myself just take the folding out bit off and leave the hand guards on with indicator in them, and fit the conventional style mirrors

  5. The clamps above are exactly the same as the ones i had fitted. The wires come down the centre of the thread of your mirrors and out through holes in the clamp.then connect up. When the parts are in front of you it will become apparent where it all fits.

  6. Thanks for your assistance guys. I'm either a muppet and don't follow your advice, or I've not explained my scenario clearly.

I don't think there is enough space on too add an additional clamp to my handle bars because the brake and clutch fluid reservoirs are the black square type that seem to take up more space on the bars than the white plastic round ones. If I was to move the reservoir in on the bar to make space it would move the position of the brake lever. (Maybe there is enough space if this is what you have done successfully??)

So it looks like my only option is to attach the new mirrors to the hole for the brake and clutch levers. The hole is not threaded and looks about 8mm in diameter. I think the pics that I posted in my first post are ones I found of a chap that has done them in a way I think I need to. I'm not sure if he's got a special clamp/converter from a 10mm threaded end to screw the mirrors into that converts to an 8mm non-threaded pipe that bolts through the brake/clutch lever.

For the clamps you guys have suggested I guess you have assumed I'd attach to the handle bar?

Sorry if I've misinterpreted what you guys were suggesting???

  7. OK I think I've just worked out what you mean... and in the process confirmed I'm a bit of a muppet.

So you just use half of the new clamp and screw it to the brake/clutch reservoir... is that correct?

Also found this thread on ducati.ms where the mirrors are attached to the clutch/brake pivot hole. I assume there is some kind of attachment that you need to screw onto the 10mm mirror thread to accept an 8mm bolt that goes through the hole. I'm going to reply to this message on ducati.ms to find out and I'll report back... just in case anyone else is thinking of doing the same.

  8. Yes remove the original half clamp that holds your resovoirs and fit the new ones in the picture , you could get mirrors with indicators in or just get standard mirrors and keep the indicators that are in the hand guards , taking the hand guards off will not give you much more width clearance , it's just the flip out mirrors that stick out a lot

  9. Great thanks for that. Now to find the best mirrors. I do plan to remove the hand guards as well just because every centimetre seems to count when squeezing through London traffic each day. I've fund the hand guards make it slightly more difficult to edge past manoeuvre around car mirrors, mainly due to their size.

Anyway I'm going to get some cheap mirrors first and try that for a few weeks then possibly get the mirrors with LEDs. The emotouk website for these ones (eMoto - Ducati Hypermotard Mirrors) seems to have an issue and does not allow me to 'check out'

  10. emoto have not been in business for about 5 years now - see the notice on the home page.

  11. Hi Antonye! Thanks for both of those pieces of info. I did read that original thread but didn't realises what you were actually doing, I saw the fact you had more space on your bars that you were using the entire clamp for the mirrors. Now that I know you just use half the clamp on your brake/clutch reservior it all makes sense. Mine are on the way in the mail now. I'm still going to remove the full hand guards though so I'll have to get some mirrors with LEDs at some point. Until then the hand guards stay in place. What did you use for indicators?

Also thanks for the note on emotouk. I had not noticed the note on the home plage. Looks like I'll have to get some in the US on my next trip over there.

The rizomas are a little out of my price range for €189 each!

  12. So just if in case there are any other numpties like me who completely misunderstood what was intended for this mirror mod.. here are some pics of mine with the process.

I ended up purchasing these (Ryde Motorbike 22mm Handlebar Mirror Mount - Black) for £4.90
Ryde Motorbike 22mm Handlebar Mirror Mount - Black: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike
and these temporary mirrors (Excellent Quality E-Marked Motorcycle Motorbike Wing Mirrors To Fit 10mm) for £19.95. I probably could have gotten cheaper ones on ebay in hind sight but these ones look like top quality to if they end up being permanent I'll be happy.

I still plan to remove the hand guards and then add mirrors with LED indicators... but I've only been able to find them in the US so far from motor-science.. but they seem pretty good.

With new 'half' the clamp being screwed in

  13. Spot on!

I think those were the same shape mirrors that I recommended in the link I posted above as they are roughly the same as the ones in the kit that Ducati supply... just about 1/5th of the price!!!

If you are removing your hand guards, I'll take them off your hands ;)

  14. Hey Antonye,

I am still thinking of removing the hand guards but I'll hang onto them for when I sell or in case I want to change back. Sorry mate! If change my mind I'll be sure to let you know.

These are the ones I think I'm going to get $265 (~£180). Just means I'll be able to squeeze though tight London traffic and make it to work on time or home in time ;)

  16. Looks like it works well.

And you just don't have any mirrors at all? Or have you had another set of eyes installed somewhere.

  17. Nope, no mirrors, I filter a lot, (London) and I'm never "tailgated" ha.

  18. Out of interest why do you have the hand guards? is it style preference, keeps your hands warmer, or something else?

  19. Protects them, I go through some very narrow gaps ;)
