Charge Rate For Standard Lead Acid Battery

  1. Out of curiosity, anyone know what voltage (or amps) an alternator / reg-rec should pump into the battery when the engine is running, no lights on?

I would have thought about 13.1 to 13.4 volts which is what mine tested at a short while ago.

  2. You're on minimum there Al.
    I look for 13.5 to 14.0
Check your earth connections and that the rec/reg is clean where it bolts to chassis as that is earth too i believ

  3. Thanks Ken....Yes, you are right about the reg/rec earth....there is a specific cable on mine for that.

Actually the reading I am getting now is more like 14 volts, having cleaned the alternator 'break' in the cables when I changed the starter sprag; but I was thinking back to when I tested it when I first got the bike and I wondered if it was overcharging now instead.

  4. Al, I think 14v is fine as this is about what mine was last time I tested it. Thats WITH a little throttle and not at idle. You can see the voltage rise with revs.
