Cheap winter hack

Discussion in 'Other Bikes' started by efcbluepete, Oct 17, 2012.

  1. So, not wanting to get the 998s out too much for the winter, I am looking at something I may want to commute on, is easy and robust.

guess it rules out a ducati, but would love to have a nice little monster or 600ss, etc, but wary of the robustness through a winter.

so, I am thinking a trailie, and maybe something like BMW F650, aprillia pegaso, Yamaha ttr, etc.

    price is £1500 or less.

so, anybody any thoughts or recommendations?

    cheers,

    Pete

  2. I just bought a Triumph Sprint RS the other day as a winter hack, as I too wont use the 998S in the winter. Its absolutely brilliant, cracking engine, decent protection, comfortable and as cheap as chips. Got his 2002 one for £1000.

  3. Nice - I did fancy one of those a good while back, and was somehow drawn to the yellow version.

Nothing under £1800 in the mcn, though - maybe a bit more trawling is needed...

  4. Yea, they do look good in yellow all right. I think MCNclassifieds are mostly dealers. Take a look at e bay, a good few cheap ones there.

  5. Have a bit of an aversion to eBay. Guess too many horror stories on there. But, will take a look anyway...

  6. I have a 1998 ST2 for sale, with panniers, 23k on the clock, folders full of history, all for the measly sum of £1200!

New MOSFET regulator, new clutch slave cylinder, uprated battery cables, runs faultlessly!

  7. i had aprilla pegaso was wicked fun wish i kept it really glicthy fueling which is easily sorted and great flick ability ,fast enough for a single the engine is yamaha's

  8. Thought the pegaso used a rotax motor, and hence was supposed to be ultra reliable. Almost got one once, but got a Honda nx650 dommie instead, which was fine until the notoriously thin oil galleries from bottom end to cam shaft blocked and starved the top end of oil.

  9. no from 2006 onward single cylinder 649cc by Yamaha, the strada model i had

  10. sorry it was 659 cc good for 106 MPH great range

  11. The Zx7R is on winter duties. Im even getting some heated grips fitted next week :upyeah: I need to give it good clean and a soaking with some ACF50 before the salt comes out to play

  12. NC30 - buy a good one and be warned it will become addictive, and possibly take over the space where the 998 sits.

CBR600 - the later FX / FY models are the first of the alloy framed and still carbed so silky smooth and a joy to ride fast when a bit slippery

  13. Yzf 600 Thundercat would be awesome,
    CBR600, nc30 or nc35 I've just got the 35 it's a little pocket rocket, ducbird is selling her 600ss

  14. Cheers Pixie.

not so keen on the nc's, dunno why, as they are well loved by those who have them. Tried a yzf600 some years ago, and just didn't get on with it.

Crm - maybe the cbr600, seems a reliable and staid option, especially for winter, but... Just dunno.

got lots of pics from ducbird, and looks very tidy. Also looking at a 900ss ie, St2, and had eye on a sprint RS (but went on eBay).

Insurance no probs, so just got to sort out looking at some, etc, now.

thanks for the thoughts, advice so far.
