Newbie question time.... The manual for the 848 states: "When checking oil level, the motorcycle should be perfectly upright and the engine cold.". So with the side stand, that's not happening as it's not upright. I'm just about to buy a paddock stand (either Abba, or Harris, there's 25 quid in it).... and realise these both achieve the "upright" big, and that's all that's said, however surely both don't help when it come to "level". As in both will have the rear wheel off the ground. Doesn't this make reading the level a bit harder... and if so, what do owners normally do to overcome this? Is the paddock stand not so useful for this? Thanks Phil
Good question. ... i get her indoors to check it while i sit on the bike, she puts some tape where the level is so i can double check
I kneel down on sight glass side/non-side stand side and pull the bike upright. You can feel the balance point where it is vertical. When she is basically weightless as dead upright, have a look. NB: doesn't work with sidestands that automatically flip up like 916.
Got a 1098s myself, but i'm guessing the method would be the same. Bike on the sidestand, kneel down so you can see the sight glass properly, gently pull the bike towards you until it's upright. Job done.
I get the mrs to sit on the bike and put a spirit level on the tank so we can both see when it's level. I check the level then cook her dinner, buy her some flowers and put the telly on to her channel. Then I go out on the bike for the day!!!!
Even on just the rear stand, still easy to read. Just look at the centre point of the oil level line and make sure it's unde the max level. Hope this makes sense...
