998 Chrome Flaking Rockers

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Simon-Ducati, Oct 28, 2015.

  1. hi guys just bought myself a 998. Pick it up next week. Does anyone know if the 998 suffers from the same problem as the 996 with the chrome coming off the rockers? Also anything else I need to look out for?

  2. Never ever heard of one doing it, of course if allowed to run really low on oil and abused from cold it's possible but as I say, never heard of one have bad rockers in all my years reading/contributing. 2002 748's seem to be the worst effected

  3. No known faults.

  4. All good then dudes

  5. I have a 998 (from new) and have had no mechanical problems with it at all and don't know any other owners that have had issues with rockers. Main bearings are (can be) a problem and I know of two people that have had them go, this is a known issue.

If the bike has been thrashed or not well maintained then this is something to be aware of. Sometimes the factory do not set the crank end float to the optimum setting and this is something worth knowing if you ever need to strip the engine.

  6. I used to own an s4rs which had this problem. Ducati Manchester, where I bought it from, told me the previous owner had bought from new and thrashed the by Jesus out of it on a race track! Didn't put me off even though the rear tyre wes clear evidence of this. The rocker was replaced and all was good once more. I keep the rocker as a lasting memory to a great bike.

  7. ^ would love to see an image or two of that rocker Carr - particularly the worn area(s). This is nothing to do with a they do wear/they don't wear debate, it's just that it's an area I have a massive interest in.

  8. I have my 12k service on the 996 at Baines in 2 weeks. Christmas may be getting cancelled kids. :Nailbiting::Nailbiting::Nailbiting: #TurnTheFeckingHeatingDown

  9. There is that… I think it's a pity Ducati dealer/specialists specialists don't offer an exchange system for the rockers on the Desmoquattro where the price is adjusted with at least some compensation. you can bet your life they don't get thrown in the dustbin as they perfect for ' reconditioners' eg Newman.

  10. Thats why i'm getting her done in November, if she is off the road for a few weeks/months getting them Newmanised I wont be crying in my GnT looking at the lovely dry roads. Just crying into my eggnog.

  11. I didn't realise – is that what Baines are going to do if they find any of your rockers need doing? I have about three brand-new openers left now and probably around 10 used/good but not sure I'll ever use them now. New openers used to turn up on Germany eBay now and then for around 30 quid each probably doesn't happen anymore

  12. Not asked them but I expect they would be fine with it as long as I sort it all out. However, if you have some going cheap....

  13. Wasn't meant to tease, sorry. Will probably sell my 996 next summer and then all related stuff will go

  14. All comments very much appreciated guys

  17. Hi how much does it cost to get them re chromed, I've got about 5 that need doing.

    Cheers

  18. Cost per rocker last year was around £37.50 from Newman Cams. I should make it clear that it doesn't involve re-chroming but instead face is built up with stellite which is far more stable and long lasting.

  20. Here's a pic showing both original and Newman rockers, in both cases (left, right) the Newman rocker is the one on the right;

As you can see the Newman rockers are a bit wider but fit fine and can't flake, so as long as the brazing holds (never heard of any failures) they should indeed be 'bullet proof'.
