Clean And Polish

  1. Hey

Any recommendations for wash and polish products?

I bought some MucOff last week and it has come up lovely and clean and WD40/hair dryer has removed the stickers but I want to get the WD40 washed off and polish her up.

I have heard some stories of MucOff being a bit harsh.

    Cheers

  2. I use some traffic film remover I borrowed from work. Then some carnuba wax polish.

  3. Mr Sheen. :)

Ps other proprietary brands are available in good stores, and some crap stores too.

  4. Don't like traffic film remover. Very good at getting tar off but also made the paint on my SRAD swing arm go a funny colour so I ended up hand polishing it.

  5. Don't use muc off. It's horrible stuff. I use it on pushbikes and it dulls everything loads

  6. Yeah, I have seen a few bad reports since buying it. Maybe save it for really bad grime if it ever happens. Good video though.

Is it just normal bog standard Mr Sheen?

  7. I just use normal turtle wax car soap sudsy stuff and water. Although I clean all the oily bits with parrafin/gunk 1st. Then rinse, then wash bike with soapy turtlewax. then rinse. Then coat all engine, wheels, swingarm, rearshox etc in wd40. Replace panels and then Mers polish.

  8. Lol, doesnt take long. But you have to keep on top of it. The coating of wd on all the engine dept etc makes cleaning next time easier. Especially the rear shock and swingarm. The chain gets parrafin cleaned as does the front sprocket area and the damned sidestand which collects all the chain lube. I might get carried away with the chain lube though.

Plus I love the smell when its clean and I start it up. The overpowering whiff of wd40 burning off. You can keep your chanel no 5, wd40 cooking gets me going.

  9. So at what point in your system do the side panels get washed? Also, don't you find it a fiddle to get he left fairing past the side stand? I have only tried twice but had to lie it on the floor on a sheet.

    This mer?

  10. Avoid muck off except mate wheels or really stubborn flies. I'm sure it has contributed massively to the corrosion on my multi

Another Mr sheen here, old fashioned mon wax type

    1. Put bike on paddock stand
    2. Remove side panels
    3. remove rear wheel (gives you room to clean)
    4. Paraffin clean chain
    5. Gunk all the oily bits of engine etc inc wheel
    6. Hose it down
    7. dump turtle wax on everything and wash away, inc detached side panels
    8. rinse
    9. wd40 engine comp, swingarm, shock etc. I also wipe a wd40 soaked rag over wheels.
    10. replace panels and give another quick once over with sponge
    11. rinse
    12. Let drip dry for 5-10mins
    13. Mer wax
    14. Polish off
    15. Start up bike and let the heat dry everything.

  11. WOW, and this takes how long?

I thought it was not good to start them and leave them to tick over and turn them back off again? Really trying not to start the winter storage debate here!

  12. Takes me less than an hour. Takes 5 mins to remove fairings. With my 916 I also remove the tank. One bolt. Prop up end with lump of wood and disconnect hoses.

Once you get into a routine, its quite quick.

Ive always started up my bikes and let them properly warm up.

  13. Cheers Bootsam

  14. SDOC 100 is the stuff rather than Muc-off it not cheap but it really works on traffic film, chain fling and general shite, without having to take a sponge to the bike (and scratch the paint)

  15. Bilt Hamber Surfex HD works out pretty cheap if you buy the 5Ltr, can dilute it right down, i use it at 50:50 for really tough grime. I use a soft brush to agitate the gunk on rear wheel, sprocket and swingarm. As with most things it can strip wax at high concentrations so I use Big Orange or similar wax friendly wash for bodywork.

Whatever polish you use you're as well to seal it with a decent wax, finish lasts longer, red paint will stay red longer and bike is easier to wash. I put 2 coats on twice a year, seems to last. I use Collinite Marque D'excellence, £25 a tin but well worth it I reckon.

  16. Oh dear....my PP multistrada looks a bit like its done the Paris Dakar rally twice without a wash.
May be 2015 will bring a bucket of soapy water her way.

  17. all this talk of cleaning and I actually put mine away without washing beforehand this year. Its not that dirty but I figured it was better to put it away dry and a bit dirty rather than clean and damp. Its not in a heated space so it'd take all winter to dry. Winter bike gets chain cleaned and lubed, headlight/ tail light and numberplate wiped now and again but thats it. i'll give it a good going over at some point and reapply ACF50

  18. I'm in the same boat, had to ride home in drizzle 3 weeks ago. Don't want to wash it as can't dry it and don't want to start the engine and just leave it to tick over for 15 minutes. What to do??????
