Hi all again I posted a thread last week regarding my rear shock got that sorted and bike a MOT. Clutch went this morning but for some reason bike shops dont really want to know!!!!!!!!!! I have dropped my bike off at my mates garage he said he will have a look at it, it didnt loose any brake fluid the clutch lever has no resistance, any help advice would be appreciated
The Ducati dry clutch is easy to work on and pretty simple. Take the clutch cover off and you should be able to see it working. If the the pressure plate doesn't move when you pull the lever, the problem is likely to be hydraulic or in the mechanics between lever and master cylinder. If the pushrod is moving the pressure plate, then the problem is likely to be inside that clutch cover, although if it is moving the pressure plate, it should be overcoming the pressure of the springs, so that's pretty unlikely. No resistance at all, no fluid coming from the slave cylinder??
as above plus biggest likelyhood that it's the slave seal gone in this hot weather (mine went yesterday and just finished fixing). Sometimes any fluid that escapes past the seal is lost in the general grime and chain wax that happens to be right next to the slave so hard to see/no warning but mine was easy to diagnose as fluid discharged under the bike as I went to put bike in gear. If it is the slave they can :- Let air in and not leak (often leads to no resistance at lever, can be restored (but usually only temporarily) with a bleed)/ Weep for ages but clutch works ok-ish until fluid all gone (can be restored (but usually only temporarily) with a bleed)/ Pop the seal or let fluid bypass the seal and discharge all fluid immediately and obviously no resistance at lever.
Hi thanks for the help.. so I have checked for leaks there are no obvious leaks. No loss from the reservoir. I have removed all clutch plates these are original but whilst looking for a replacement clutch kit there is no retainer on mine and some kits dont come with one a little confusing, the plates had a little left maybe 1mm a side, Bike has covered 16500miles, Just to add now the bike had cooled the clutch did allow me to select gear and creep forward many thatnks
Check the bearing in the clutch pressure plate. If seized it can spin the pushrod, this then heats up the slave thru friction, which can lead to no clutch.
I'm up for changing the whole lot just to escape bike downtime. Is genuine Ducati the only way/best way or do I have other options eBay parts scare me more than Ducati prices but would still love to save
there are many after market slave cylinders but Oberon hard to beat if a little more expensive (around £90 now I believe). You could just replace the seal for around £10 and it's very easy to do. I know what you are saying about Ebay and it is a gamble but have 'got away' with s/h like this a few times now :- DUCATI M800IE MONSTER 2004 MAY FIT S2 S4 620IE 696 S4R CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER | eBay
Hi all thanks for your help I think I will change everything. Its very hard to find a garage that would deal with the bike, I was charged £310 (oil and filters) by my local shop for a service to be told he wont do any more work on it, But this seems easy enough.
