749 Clutch Lever Movement

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Philip, May 23, 2015.

  1. Hi again all.

OK, so I seem to have successfully replaced the clutch drum I managed to damage and refit all the components. That was the good news! The bad news is that the clutch lever no longer works properly and only moves a very small amount, no where near as much as would do normally.
I do have a clutch slave cylinder fitted and I'm assuming the system needs bleeding? Only problem is I don't have a clue what to do next to fix it. Any help would be massively appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Philip.

  2. Could you explain the lever movement more precisely please? Also is there any fluid in the system? Is the push rod seated correctly? The work you've done is it defiantly correct? What was it doing before you started?

  3. Have you put stainless clutch springs in? Is your clutch lever coming back maybe half way then going solid? (oo er missus!)
Some aftermarket springs can become coil bound. Try with your old springs in and if your clutch works ok then try a small washer under each spring cap with the other springs, that should fix it.

  4. above plus when you say clutch slave fitted, do you mean you replaced that as well? there are two pushrod lengths and it could be that that this slave is for the "other" length. Could simply be that the system needs bleeding but also there is a small chance that the slave has 'pumped up' while fitting etc. if you have a bleed nipple on the slave (well worth fitting if you haven't) then just undoing this a pinch (with protecting cloth etc) usually allows piston to return to end of stroke.

  5. Make sure you have the clutch plate installed correctly. The hole with the arrow/dot needs to go over the slotted spring post. Also make sure the splines of the plate are seated correctly on the splines of the clutch drum.

  7. Thanks all! The clutch slave was already fitted but thought I'd mention it in case it helped isolate the problem. I've fitted new springs so I'll start by removing these and testing the clutch lever to see if fixes the problem. If that doesn't I'll keep going until I figure it out.
I'll let you know how I get on!!
Tobytyke...thanks for the offer!! If I get stuck I'll let you know. :0)
