Clutch Problem

  1. So I've done around 20 miles on the bike this week but in that time the clutch has gone from progressive too sharp as hell, so much so its nearly impossible to pull away. As this is the first dry clutch is there any thing I should look at first? I have cleaned it but other than that its not been touch and as far as i can see in the service history is original clutch, 50,000 miles original. Any pointers would be good for starting points. Thanks

  2. Sounds the same as mine check your fluid levels, leaking slave seal?

  3. Thanks mate, I'll have a look at that first, hope its not as that's a genuine part only on my bike.

  4. don't worry if it is as the actual seal is similar to later type slaves and is available. Hard to guess problem from symptoms - have you got play at the lever? Is it engaging with lever at the end of travel? Can you engage a gear easily or is there a 'clunk' and bike lurches forward momentarily?

  5. My clutch is a wet one, but it will sometimes lurch when engaging first gear when the engine is only just started from cold.

Don't forget your bike has been standing a long time.....maybe it needs using a bit for it to free up......

.....but at least yours should be a d*mn sight easier to deal with if it has to come apart (no oily mess etc)......

  6. It is engaging half way through travel, it goes into gear with no problems, I can even get it in to neutral with the engine running. It dose sound like a cat being strangled when it dose bit. Its that sharp it stalls or spins the wheel. Will whip the clutch cover off tomorrow and have a look. Like you say Al no mess apart from the dust:upyeah:

  7. so does my (wet) clutch every day but not repeatedly after first start. Point of asking was to try and get some more symptoms not necessarily saying how a correct clutch behaves. Still hard to say from above but by stripping and inspecting plates carefully i'm sure all will be revealed. It's worth checking the pushrod bearing is not seized while you are there.

  8. Hi Chris.......Yep, mine doesn't always do it....It must be the slightest difference in the temperature each day.

  9. check for exesive wear ion the basket and center,my old bike would occasionally squeal like a pig when I let the clutch out,it was caused by the dust,a quick blowout with the airline allways did the trick.

  10. Mine is as a result of not draining semi-synthetic when it stood for 6 months AL as it's only just started to do it plus neutral difficult now. Doesn't matter what anyone says even the right kind of synthetic oil affects the plates in the end and particularly when standing for long periods. I'm sure you are right that temperature also makes a difference as when engine stinking hot is the only time I can now start to get neutral easily again.

  11. Well I have a damp cylinder, so new seal on new slave, I'll have to ring my not so local ducati dealer on Monday and see if the parts are still available. all clutch parts look ok, there's not a great deal of meat left on the plates but they'll do for now. Basket has no ware on it at all, not bad for the miles.

  12. I bought a new/used on from gtec complete slave mater with the pushrod for £10. It was replaced at 500 miles by the owner of a new 1098. Always worth asking

  13. is that the slave on the left hand side? Mines on the right hand side in the clutch cover.

  14. I have just bought a clutch cover from the states for £50 I would imagine that will need new seals.

  15. I have ask Ducati dealer before and if I remember correctly only the whole slave was available at nearly £100!! I'll give them a ring tomorrow, if their no help will go over to made in Italy as they have the parts list there.

  16. Andrew at mdina italia been awesome sorting out my parts, just got notice of another box of bits in its way. V v helpful

  17. What I'm about to as will sound really stupid, dose the clutch slave on the 900 push or pull on the clutch. The reason I ask is I saw a Honda with the slave cylinder on the out side of the clutch cover and I've found a nice open clutch cover that looks strong enough and with enough meat in the middle to mount the slave, like baldboy says they are cheap the standard slaves, I have found one for little money but just need to know if my thinking will work.

  18. 900 dry clutch is a push clutch I had too get the extra pushrod as later slaves. Are slightly different and need a longer rod

  19. I was thinking of making a aluminium spider to replace the cover with one of the later types bolted to it,it would work but it may stick out a little too far, have you seen the ones on ebay £300 DUCATI PANTAH TT2 | eBay

  20. Thanks for that, I'll order the cover then as it will be coming from the US. Not too worried about it sticking out but I do know what you mean, could look a bit strange. Will have to tidy the clutch up, thinking blue with red springs.
