998 Clutch Problem

  1. Hi Lads and Lassies , I put new clutch and brake levers on my 998 on Thursday and took it out yesterday ( Saturday ) for a spin ( first spin since fitting them ) , about 15 minutes into the spin I noticed the clutch lever was starting to feel different , the lever was nearly out all the way before she started to pull away when stopped at lights and when I opened her up the revs shot up and no power to the back wheel and it started to get worst . Got her home and bled the system and oiled the clutch lever/master cylinder plunger . Took her out this morning and the same thing happened after 15 minutes , I'm thinking new friction plates but she was fine before I changed the levers . I'm gonna do nothing to her and let her cool down and take her out later to see will she be ok for the first 15 minutes. Any other ideas ???

  2. I would check and strip the clutch to make sure all is built up correctly. Is the basket good and are any plates hanging up anywhere or sticking, are they in the right order. I assume it's not a slipper clutch as they need to be built up differently.

Have you checked the clutch pack for correct splitting?

It's a fairly simple mechanism so a good look over all of it should locate the problem.

Do you use an aftermarket slave cylinder?

  3. Have you got a bit of free play at the lever?

  4. I had the clutch apart last night and all looked ok but it work ok before i put the levers on and all oem parts except for the levers .

  5. Might be worth trying the old levers to see if all is back to what is was before, that will at least eliminate the levers or highlight that they could be the problem. It could possibly be the way the lever bears on the master cylinder piston, although really it should be fine. I have found even cheap Chinese levers have worked perfectly on two of my bikes.

I use CRC levers on my 998 and they are fine but the clutch comes in a little late compared to standard but there is very little in it.

    What levers are they?

  6. The lever stub that goes into the m/c needs adjusting. Its too long and not opening the return valve to the reservior so that your hydrolics are sealed. When the motor gets hot the fluid is expanding operating the clutch by itself.

  7. That sounds like it could be the problem alright , once the motor gets hot after 15 minutes the clutch is giving up working . only in the door so I'll try that tomorrow evening cheers lads

  8. I was able to turn that stub in more by about 5mm and took her out tonight for about 30 minute with no issues , cheers 900streetfighter
