having just purchased a new clutch slave cylinder and piston kit,i fitted it to find when pulling the clutch in fluid running down from the underside of the cylinder housing, took it off again and took piston out there was a bit hanging off the edge of the seal ,have i made a schoolboy error ? is there any particular way to put the piston kit in? there is only the spring and the piston after all, also there is a rubber cover over end of pushrod with a smaller grommet within, which way does that go? either way i reckon fluid should not be getting past the piston seal.any ideas?
Sorry, but it's some years since I delved into this area of my bike, but it seems to me: - If you bought a complete new cylinder and piston, they should have been pre-assembled before delivery. From the sound of it, the unit is defective and the seal is damaged - I assume it leaked before you took it apart? It would be very unusual for a new cylinder to be delivered without the piston/seal already installed (whether for old car braking system, bike clutch, or whatever). - I can't remember much about the thrust rod mechanism (must take cyclinder off and clean in thatarea again some time soon) but if you are leaking fluid, it is very much more likely that this is due to a clutch slave cylinder/piston sealing problem, and the slightest defect in cylinder wall or piston seal will result in leakage. It sounds like a "defective parts supplied" scenario to me. On a postive note, if only the seal is defective, its no big deal to replace it, but you should probably return the whole unit.
I can't work out if the OP has bought a complete new slave cylinder (in which case why buy a kit as well?) or has just bought the kit to service the old slave (ooooh, Massa, that hurts!)......
i bought the parts from ducati and was not offered the option of buying it assembled,i got the housing and seperately a piston kit which comes with a piston seal already on it and a spring
It looks like you may have damaged the seal while fitting it, it's good practice to smear the new seal with brake fluid to help assembly. Steve
yes i reckon you are right, the new piston is different to the original with just one seal which does not look like it comes off the original has two o rings and looks more usual where as on the new one the seal is not an o ring and looks weak to begin with also new one has a spring with it and there was no spring in the original, not happy with the new one can anyone recommend an after market or up graded version?
