Completely Non Bike Related But Any Plumbers Around For A Quick Question?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by JH_1986, Apr 3, 2015.

  1. Got a dishwasher coming tomorrow and can't see a spare cold outlet in the kitchen but our cold and hot taps appear to be screwable connections to which I assume I can run a T-junction from the cold tap. Below are pics of the cold tap pipe and the kind of intended T-Junction.

Would that all work or am I talking crazy talk. Cold pressure seems absolutely fine so can't see any issues there.

  2. To connect the new tap and retain the service valve you show would require cutting the copper pipe and connecting in-line or alternatively you could undo the existing connector but you would need another nut, olive and a short piece of pipe to make fit.
Looking at your picture if you can cut the pipe an inch below the union and insert the new tap inline would be the easiest.

The existing valve is a service valve, that could be removed and the washing machine tap put in its place.

  3. I thought I could 'replace' the middle section in the top pic, with the item in the bottom pic. The middle section in the top pic is threaded both ends, same as item in bottom pic?!?

  4. Yes I have just edited my original post.
The service valve allows work on the tap or replacing the tap to be carried out without cutting the water off completely.

  5. Sorted [emoji106]

Thanks Birdie, will nip out tomorrow and grab one and get cracking. No more washing up [emoji2]

  6. Alternatively remove and discard the isolation valve, connect the washing machine "t" to the copper 15mm from your tap using the exciting olive and nut. Then connect the flexible pipe to the "t" but use a fiber washer not the rubber one supplied for better seating/ water tightness. Lastly connect the flexible washing connection to the branch of the "t". You will have lost the isolation for your cold tap this way, but if you have a nearby alternative nots not too much of a problem. Enjoy the washing up!

  7. Nuts, olives and fibre... Think you two fella's have your industry mixed up. Nutritionists are we?

Thanks though, will see if I can get it all sorted tomorrow and post a pic of the beer I'll be having whilst the washing up gets done for me.

  8. Compression fixings are ace.If it leaks, just tighten them up.:upyeah:

  9. Oh yeah, keep the isolation valve! At least you havent got to turn all the water off if you need to fiddle.

  10. I was actually already thinking I could keep that valve. Turn it off there and fit the junction after it. At least the flexible hose gives me that ability for movement.

  11. By keeping the service valve you would need a short peice of copper pipe to complete the joint.

  12. True, forgot about that. I want ease so cancel that. Will turn it off at the mains and run the water dry and replace that valve. I do electronics, not plumbing so definitely want the easy option.

Will I need that plumbing tape stuff on the connectors to keep everything 'tight'?

  13. Not a case of "will i need" its more of a requisite.....if you dont fit it an it leaks youve gotta pull it all apart again.....i always use it when i can....although its your choice...

  14. The end of the thread the you screw the tap flexi hose onto(w/m tee) could be filed 1mm so that the countersink for the olive is removed. Makes a wider seat for the seal.

  15. Get a roll of ptfe, 20p. A wrap round the olive won't hurt. Don't overtighten or olive will be fkd.

  16. fly me over and I will connect it for free :upyeah:

That took longer than it should have. Isolation valve wouldn't budge but found some 15mm chrome pipe (bling, bling) in the garage so went out and got some olives, nuts and a pipe cutter.

No drips, but a metal bit just fell out of the T valve so the cutoff for the dishwasher doesn't actually work anymore. Couldn't bear to make another trip out to return it so will just use the isolation valve if I ever need to disconnect it.
