Here’s a thing. In the last I’ve had excellent responses from Ducati Modena to confirm/not bike authenticity. Email quickly followed up by telephone from delightful lady giving me info. Recently I’ve been looking at 749 and 999 R models, which understandably can be inauthentically described. Having emailed a VIN to check, I was surprised this morning to be telephoned and told that, because I’m not the owner, and the bike isn’t being sold by a Ducati dealer, Ducati won’t give me any information. Somewhat stuck now.
This now the "normal" response and it seems to be due to "GDPR" issues, i.e. giving someone information about something owned by someone else.. You might be able to persuade the owner to submit their V5 and pictures to gain the information. It is in their interests to help sell the bike after all.
Mmm. Except in this case, the SuperbikeFactory (I know!) just say it’s shown as an R on an HPI check, so that’s that as far as they’re concerned. Not interested in checking with Modena. PS no history and dubious provenance means I’m staying clear, as suggested by forum members.
Yes, it is a pain, but you can gain some valuable intel from the engine/frame numbers by posting them on here.
The last time i'd this with the factory they wanted the following; 4 x good close up photographs of the motorcycle. A copy of the V5 & driving licence. Chassis and engine number pictures. Very off putting in my opinion.
@ibgarrow, just put my 748R VIN into the recall page and it comes back as 748R. Looking like the VIN supplied is for a 999. Andy
This has been the SP for a few years now. The owner or dealer would supply the details. A non Ducati dealer still has the V5 and if they are VAT registered it all works fine…
Ducati Customer service (located in Borgo Panigale, in Bologna’s suburb - not in Modena where they make vinegar and Ferraris, not Ducatis) have been releasing their database info to owners only at least since early 2019… It’s not new at all. They will provide model authentication as well as frame vs engine number match. As a seller, every owner should have this info available for potential buyers, especially if dealing with a limited model. Here’s their email : [email protected]
@ibgarrow, as Android853sp did, I have put my Panigale R VIN into the recall page and it comes back as "Panigale R", consistent with the model designation given on the UK V5C, the Ducati CoC and the UK Dealer bike records. These results seem to indicate that the Ducati recall check provides an accurate and consistent description of the actual bike model. Hope this helps. Tom.
