Hi, apologies if this is a stupid question, but I'm crap with electrics. I want to hook up a USB charger to the factory-fitted switched GPS connector under the left-hand panel. I'm going to order this USB to bare wire charger from BurnsMoto. My question is, what kind of male/female connector do I need to hook the bare wires up to the GPS power supply? Are these things universal or do Ducati use their own connectors? Again apologies if this is an idiotic question! Many thanks.
There is a connector already in place with a pair of wires coming off that protected by shrink wrap. Cat that off, solder and shrink wrap your wires to that, job done.
The GPS outlet has a connector with a couple of bare wires encased in heat shrink. Unplug the connector and carefully cut away the heat shrink to reveal the bare wires. Solder the new new joints and cover with new heat shrink (best solution) or use a small screwed 'chocolate block' connector and some electrical tape (adequate solution). Rout the wires and reconnect the original connector.
I have piggybacked the gps power connection to add this dual charger. I fitted it by cutting a hole into fuse cover on left of dash so I can charge on go with phone etc in tank bag. Not sure if image came through so here is the link. USB Dual Socket - Oxford Products USA Inc.
If all else fails (eg your bike is missing the usual connector with short tails, or you feck it up), I can supply you with another connector with tails of whatever length you need. Just pm me. Cost will be that of the parts and postage. Not in it to make money, just help others.
On a "similar" vein, I lost my power supply to the Ducati Satnav (Nuvi 510) this very wet weekend in Normandy and assuming that a bit of contact cleaner on the connector doesn't solve it, has anyone got a picture of the standard bike connector, any relevant fuse, what panels need to come off or any other advice on tracing the problem? I know the satnav unit is still ok as it linked up to a mates USB power pack unit? As an aside, the wet weather sent the switchgear into a tailspin, "red switch not released" when it was, ignition turning off, steering lock not working, fuel cap refusing to open, information on mpg etc not cycling through and the old favourite, EXVL error - all gets a bit tiresome when you are on holiday!
Happened to me too. Pulled all the wiring out thinking it must have been my dodgy soldering. Turns out it was the fuse (which is under the pillion seat) - from memory I think it was red...
Its fuse number two in the fuse box at right rear of riders seat, and it should be 10A. The satnav connector is on the same fuse as the other accessory sockets, so you could check to see if they are live (ignition on only).
Cheers lads - the accessory sockets are OK (and presumably the fuse?), as my Autocom feed is tapped into the left hand under seat socket wiring and that is working fine? As the Garmin connects to the PC/battery pack OK, it looks like the on bike lead is shot - there is a neoprene seating collar around the Mini USB connector on the lead and part of that was missing - when I messed with it, the whole lot fell off, so I guess water was getting in there?
The connector with the shrink wrapped wires is missing from my recently bought second hand Multi. Previous owner probably kept the wire to his SatNav. Does anyone know where I can order a new one?
Hi John, Just come across the thread regarding the connector with the shrink wrapped wires. Mine is also missing from my 2014 Multi. I was wondering if you could still provide one? Thanks Dave
Hi Dave, Yes I can still supply these. I see you gave pm'd me. So I will reply to that ;-) Cheers John.
The connector is a JST JWPF series. As mentioned the half you need is already on the bike and just needs splicing. If you want to buy spares CPC sell them (I've just ordered some). I've also ordered the 4 connector ones as I broke the tab off the ones that plug into the Ohlins fork cap (S version)
