Hi looking for information on the 1000ds ,it's a 04 modle with 30k on it. So what's the service time for belts changing.are there any real faults I need to know about. The owner says there's a small fuel weep by fuel pump and the fuel tank as some small bubbling on the tank. Now I know the bubbling is down to ethanol but is the tank scrap or is it repairable? Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Cheers steve
I've had 3 over the last 5 years, and still have two - you do need to determine the cause of the leak above all to start with, because if the pump fixing flange is distorted badly then it's another tank essentially. It's a "grey area" as if only slightly deformed (if this is even the reason for the "weep"!) then cleaning up and using a thicker gasket could rescue things. This is not a bike you ought to buy without a substantial reduction if it turns out to be above, and personally I would look for another unless above cause established etc.
they were last I looked, will have a scan now. Second hand isn't out of the question, but needs to be sold from a breaker rather than one that is already distorted (I know this goes without saying) so careful inspection of flange needed. Main clue is how much paint bubbling/water blisters are evident* as this shows how much moisture tank has endured. Both my bikes will foul on rear crossmember mount upon removing because growing in size is standard unless environment is constantly hot and dry/no humidity. *most tanks by now might show this under the seat/under the fairings due to inevitable moisture trap, but when they show blisters all over main front tank area then it's one to avoid.
couldn't find one on brief search, but I think they are out there but £500 plus from vague memory. One Ducati spares stockist listing new at £1,827.. EDIT:- https://ca-cycleworks.com/mts-tank-blk.html
Hope I helped Steve, there are many on here who will add more - make sure dashboard is fully functioning as regards all lights and immobility function as these also cause problems eventually, virtually as standard due to damp and water ingress, repair is difficult and replacement is laborious due to immobiliser re-organising and (no need to add) becoming scarse and expensive.
The tank pump flange distorted on my Numpty leading to leak, paintwork was OK. I purchased a small sheet of 2mm Viton, made a gasket and it 'fixed' the leak so if that is your only concern, there is a remedy.
i think “only concern” is playing it down a bit, as said in above post, i also fixed a mildly distorted face on a tank with a thicker gasket, but also came across a tank that was too distorted and weeped repeatedly before giving up. It’s also ok as a DIY proposition, but not many motorbike repair outfits would take it on anyway as such a safety related item.
Great, fun bikes, I put 20k in two years miles on my 03 DS before I had my 1200 but, as stated above, tank swelling is an issue and water in the clocks is a problem, both can be expensive and difficult to source good used replacements. On the plus side it's a great engine if cared for, I could change the belts in less than 20 minutes, valve check and adjust in an afternoon so easy to work on (once you have the tank off). Clutches are dry and tend to be noisy, don't let that put you off though, they really can sound awful but still work fine. Valve guides can be an issue on the earlier years, they wear prematurely. Basically, if you are handy with the spanners, know your way around bikes and are willing to rectify faults yourself then they're great, if however you would need to take it to a mechanic to fix then I'd say avoid.
Great bikes, and you can’t see what it looks like when riding…. Fun wheelie machine, like a big supermoto and the motor is a peach. Brakes are crap. Ecu and dash need to match iirc, so if dash goes it can be difficult/expensive to resolve. Tank you’ve covered anyway. Only real issue I had was a tps problem and it gave me awful back ache.
