Considering Scratching The Ducati Itch

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by fut1a, Feb 11, 2014.

  1. After selling my blade last year I now find myself looking at possibly buying another bike. I have been looking at Blades and even the BMW s1000rr. I like the way the BMW rides and all that, but I just don't think I could live with the looks. So I have been looking at a Ducati.

I was considering the 899 but I know I would always be thinking of the 1199. I quickly discounted the 899 however because of the free termi giveaway in December. When it was time to sell, a bike with termis would be more desirable than one without, unless I specked them, but then the bike would owe me more.

Anyway I have been looking at 2013 1199 S models, and there seem to be quite a difference in prices. I have only just started looking however, so I would appreciate it, if anyone could tell me what would you think I could pick one up for?

  2. There certainly seems to be plenty of choice. Buy the best you can afford would be my advice. It's worth paying the extra for a pampered example in my book.

  3. Im confused, did you mean you didn't want to buy an 899 because they were giving Termi exhausts in the deal? So now you will only buy an 1199s which is (new) £7k more?

  4. What I mean is that because they are no longer doing the termi deal, it would probably cost me 1k more to get the same spec bike.

  5. Better buying a 1098R or an unmolested 999R , that's what I'd prefer. But horses and all that.

  6. The Termis are £1500 but that is still a lot less than going for a 1199s

  7. I would try to ride them both as lots of people seem to prefer the 899.
There are lots around with termis of course now so some are bound to come up in the spring.

  8. Ah but that's not the point , the point is he's paying for something he could of had free. It irks oh how it irks.

  9. Fair point, but they wont retain value second hand. In fact there will probably be little or no price difference compared to a standard bike.

  10. It's probably extremely wise, thinking about selling the bike before you've even bought it.

Sales value has never been a consideration for me. I buy a bike to use and keep for some years. By the time I've put 30k miles on it, whether it has Termis or not is going to be largely irrelevant. I only sell it when it really is time to move on. Had the current one for the last 8 years and so far, I'm still chuffed to bits with it.

  11. Probably wise, but the wrong reason to buy a bike as you so eloquently explain.

  12. Im with Gliddo, I don't buy any bike with the thought of how much it will be worth when/if I decide to sell it. I buy it to enjoy owning and riding it not to think how much money I will have lost a year or so down the line. All bikes depreciate no matter what upgrades or trinkets are on it so buy what bike takes your fancy and forget about how much its worth in the future.

  13. Get the money spent "You only get one life" ENJOY

  14. I rode the 899 & 1199, after the 1199 ride I knew It was I wanted. I found a new 2013 ABS and had the Termi cans and DP seat as extras. I just couldn't bring myself to spend even more on the S.

but you need to test ride both.

  15. I am guilty of thinking about the re sale value of things before I buy them. I don't think that's a bad thing, it's this way of thinking that enables me to buy a Ducati outright in the first place

I would always want the 1199 anyway, so getting the 899 was not really going to be an option for me. The termi giveaway just gave me another excuse to look at the 1199.

  16. I wouldnt bother with the S. But then I wouldnt bother with a Panigale anyway. Its too much money for what you get. Plus its not the prettiest Ducati either. The 899 is prettier due to the swigarm but the older bikes are nicer. I'd spend my money on an 1198S or an 848Evo. But you want an 1199 and thats fair enough and your mind is set. Plenty around secondhand. If I was spending 20k on a bike i'd buy the HP4 not a Ducati, unless it was the 1098R but i'd get that for 15k. 5k less for a much better bike. I'm afraid the Pani is a marmite bike. Those who love them really love them, those who dont, well dont. :) So opinions on here are going to be mixed.

I'd buy a base Pani and get the suspension sorted by k tech or similar and save the money. Then you'd get a much better set up bike than an S.

  17. I can understand your thinking but buying a bike comes from the heart (unless you want to commute on it). Therefore, ride both of 'em and see which you prefer. If you've discounted the 899, ride the 1199S with and without the Termis and see what you think.

If you want an 1199S with Termignoni end cans fitted, I'm sure you'll be able to find a mint low milage one without too much trouble but it will make sod all difference in price when you trade it in.

  18. To be honest I am not bothered about having Termis on an 1199. They are a nice to have but not a necessity in my opinion.

Regarding the 899, if I wanted to sell a bike and i had not specked the termis, then I would be up against a lot of bikes with the free termis fitted. They may not increase the value, but in my opinion people including myself would go for the one with the termis before one without.

  19. Good advice me thinks.... or even buy an 899, do the above and add some carbon wheels, a custom map for each cylinder and some bling rear sets.

  20. I put termis on my 1199s, not to increase the value but to make it more attractive to buyers when the time came to sell it on.
And of course they look and sound the business, that's the real reason. lol.
