Without checking what was in the bike i bought 3l of motul motocool organic (red) this morning ive drained the circuit and the stuff that came out is blue ive then started to refill the circuit and have so far added about 0.5l ive just read that mixing the blue and red stuff can create a world of pain - bit late yes i know what do those in the know suggest - do i commit and carry on or should i flush the circuit and refill with blue stuff?
Depends on if you properly flushed the system first. If you did, no problem filling with whatever you like so long as it’s designed for alloy engines. Motocool should not be mixed with non organic products according to Motuls spec sheet. If you didn’t properly flush it then that would be my start point.
Yes, you shouldn’t mix different types of coolant. Just done my 748 with the Motul Motocool, mine was yellow. I would go to your nearest garage and get 5l of deionised or distilled water. Drain what you have out, then fill with deionised, run and drain. Do this twice to completely flush out the old coolant. Then fill with your new coolant.
Minimum 5l. I would get 10l personally. Obviously you need to run the engine up with distilled water once you have drained the old coolant. Again and again until it runs clear. Do not use tap water (especially as you are in a very hard water area).
My OCD condition got the better of me and I went a step further! When filling with new coolant, I filled with new, went for a run, drained it and then refilled with some new just to make sure I had got all the deionised out! Prob extreme, but it keeps me happy!
i drained but did not flush so ill flush with deionised as suggested is distilled the same as deionised?
Hi, just doing a coolant change on mine and used Motul yellow coolant and I bought 4 litres. Haynes and book says it holds 3.5ltrs but can only get around 2.5ltrs. Just interested if others found the same OR it’s got air lock somewhere…. Cheers
Yes, 2.5ltrs is all you will get out of it just using drain plug on water pump cover, the rest will be sat inside the engine. You can get more, if you lean bike over, and even more if you take the lowest hose off and lean it over. Just make a note of how much comes out so you can make sure the same amount goes back in, providing the level was good before draining. When refilling give all the pipes a good squeeze to release any air locks and only fill to minimum level. Hope this helps.
Just want to be clear that this is works for my 748. Unsure if it’s the same with a 999 as per the original post.
