I noticed today a small amount of coolant on the garage floor (red liquid), but it is very slow. I believe this is quite common, is there somewhere in particular where it is know to leak from? Has anyone tried rad weld and fixed the problem? I'm hoping my leak is small enough to fix with it. Thanks
Could just be the overflow from the rad I think, exits via a tube that pokes through the bottom of the fairing as I recall If its the rad that's gone at the mount (most common) then when you get the bike up to temp you'll usually see steam coming up from the fairing front. I wouldn't go near Radweld, I'd get a Chinese rad before doing anything like that. I'm not advocating a Chinese rad either just saying if I was short of cash I'd rather go that route than endanger damaging or blocking the cooling system with Radweld. But Heh that's just what I'd do
Thanks mate. Would this overflow every day though? I did mention it last time it went in for the fork seals to be done, they said then they couldn't find anything. It runs as it should, gets hot in traffic and then cools etc. No steam coming out from the fairing top.
When my rad leaked due to the fractured mounting I used to notice coolant splattered down the side of the left hand fairing after it exiting through the vent opening. I only seemed to notice it after a ride, probably because the bike was at its hottest and the air flow would blow it out of the vent. I could never make it leak visibly simply by running the bike up to temperature whilst stationary.
New to this site and first post so be gentle! My 1198 has just has a coolant leak fixed which was from the overflow pipe, nothing leaking from the rad itself. I noticed a pool of coolant (maybe a small cup full) on the ground immediately after parking it, and you could see it coming out the overflow pipe. Basically the coolant would boil and bubble in the reservoir, then overflow out of the pipe. The fans would kick in and bring the temp back down, but obviously the coolant level was quickly reducing. After a suspected head gasket failure, it turned out to be the thermostat that wasn't opening fully causing a 40 degree temp difference from one side of the thermostat and the other.
