I’m off to look at a 91 900ss and wanted to make sure the engine and frame numbers were correct. I’ve seen a shazaam post on the vin number so hopefully I’m sorted there but not seen a lot on what the engine number should be. To anyone with knowledge of 900ss engine numbers would something like this be correct ZDM900A2C? Is there a year identifier for the engine? I’m guessing the frame number should be something like this – ZDM1LA4NMB or is that for later bikes? If I remember rightly my old 900ss had frame and engine numbers in dot matrix printer style? Cheers Paul
IIRC no year data for engine, my 1992 EG: "ZDM904A2****" Frame "ZDM906SC2*0000" year and country of sale can be found if you know how, I don't. you're correct, type face is similar to dot matrix. Good luck with the viewing.
If you go along to your friendly MOT tester, he can access more about the bike than you can online...... .......all you need is the basic information ie Reg. No. and Make............He can see if the frame and engine numbers remain the same through several years history....... .........the internet 'vehicle check' sites rarely get everything in detail.........You might get an accurate HPI only to find they can't provide the engine number for some unknown reason, especially when the damn thing is noted on the registration document.
Paul, My 92 is as follows. ZDM904A2C*123456* ZDM906SC2*123456* The engine and chassis numbers were not the same they were about 30 out. Hope this helps. Cheers Gaz
Thanks gents gives me something to check. The engine number is sort of what I was expecting but the frame is totally different & no idea what the numbers and letters mean. I've learnt that on the engine number 904 is the cc, A is Air cooled, 2 is 2 valves and C is carbs. I did wonder whether the later frame info I'd seen would be the same and it looks like Ducati changed it at some date.
Paul, Sorry to be boring as I have mentioned this before. I had problems with an HPI check because I only gave the numbers on the V5 which were the 6 digits. It came back as stolen or written off or smoething and had got mixed up with a car, It took a while to find this out, so if all appears OK and you get something like this dig deeper. Cheers Gaz
Gaz, I saw your thread about that. I've not done an HPI yet as I've not had the reg number, I'll ask him tomorrow for it. The bloke seems genuine enough and would appear to have paperwork back to moto cinelli but I suppose i'd better hpi it. I think i saw somewhere that Ducati will give you bike info if you ask and send them your vin numbers. Cheers Paul
