My project 996S is currently black and I'm intending to return it to it's OE glory. My question is what decals should a UK 996S have, where should they be, and what colour should the tail be? I'm assuming that it basically looks like a biposto in all red (with a small DUCATI on the tank, and Desmoquattro above 996 on the fairings) but with a very small 'DUCATI 996S' on either side of the tail piece. But it's hard to know what's standard as when you look on the internet there's all sorts out there. Lots of bikes with the white tail too - was this an option? Or standard? Some with a white nose too - what's that about? Any help or knowledge gratefully received!
The 996 biposto is all red. The white number board at the front was not standard on any model that I am aware of. The SP/R models had the mono tail with the white number board section and it's a nice look in my opinion. I've seen some paint the pillion seat on a bp with the white and it's not very nice to look at. (again personal opinion).
As above, the white number boards were never a standard option from Ducati, at the time I had my own restoration company and I was painting these for people, to say I did a few would be an understatement! The white flash on the tails was standard on SP/SPS/R models, the monoposto conversions offered by Ducati for your S would have been all red with the decals as shown, adding the number boards is a personal choice, I painted a couple of dozen of those as well!
I don't suppose you remember what the OE colour of the mirrors was? I've seen red and black and I'm not sure what they're supposed to be!
Stickers on 996 are silver to match the fairing stickers. Ironically, if you order new 996 tail stickers from Ducati (genuine part) you get black ones! Terry at The Image Works is your friend for the correct sticker colour.
