996 Correct Speedo Drive Orientation

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Serjames, Jul 2, 2023.

  1. Hi could someone take a good well lit photograph (unlike mine!) please of the left hand side (kerbside) of their front wheel. I'm trying to fix a broken speedo. And can see that my drive cable has snapped at the wheel end. The transmission gear coming off the wheel is pointing back at about 2:30 on the clock face, causing the cable drive to have a very pronounced bend up to the vertical and through the caliper up into the nose cone. Has this been fitted correctly or should it be vertical ?

    Thanks :)

  2. Mine is like that.

  3. I’d say more like 01 - 01:30. Sorry about the poor lighting but you can see the cable, just! :)

  4. That position might be somewhere near with the Ohlins forks and the cable goes near the caliper

  5. I seem to recall mine was almost parallel to the fork axis.

  7. that’s actually incorrect, the 748r/998’s with Brembo 4 pad calipers, it’s meant to go down between the two caliper bolts, not down the inside of the calipers. Don’t ask me why. But this comes up often and all the original manuals state that.

on the original gold line calipers they sit way more tight to the leg mounts so the speedo drive has to go down the inside of them parallel to the leg.

either way there is from memory some stoppers for the speedo drive to stop it spinning.

  8. That’s interesting. Mine was like that when I got it so out of curiosity I’ve just had a look at a couple of 748r’s for sale. One is like mine above and one is …..

I like stuff like this. Different part number for the speedo cables between 748/998r’s and Showa fork models. I can only assume that my bikes speedo cable got replaced at some point with the Showa fork cable. Every day is a school day.

  11. Yes , the white clamps that the mudguard is mounted onto are not all identical .
The lower left one has a lug sticking out that stops the speedo drive from rotating with the wheel .

Also , the speedo drive won't stay in the correct position if the cable isn't dressed in properly .

The photos from @bettes and @Expat Jack ( in post #6 ) show the right routing .

  12. Thanks very much for quick responses... even if your pictures are all pants... ;-)

Serious, thanks, so it seems my drive is the "wrong side" of the lug and should be rotated counter-clockwise. Explains why the cable snapped.

just means I need new tools. My front stand only works on Radial brake bikes, and I'm going to need that torque wrench....

  13. I know mate, it caused massive debate last time as when dealers and tyre fitters take the wheels out they never check. My mates one is currently routed incorrectly and it puts two kinks in it and you can see it’s been rubbing on the top of the caliper mount. His is a 748r it should be down between the caliper bolts

  14. That’s correct , the speedo cable goes through the caliper bolts because if it’s outside like in expat jack’s picture when the forks compress the fork tube rubs off the speedo cable and cut into the fork tube :upyeah:

  15. That appears to be the crux of it .

After looking again at all photos , it seems that there are different speedo cable routings ( and lengths ? ) ,
depending on Ohlins or Showa forks being used .

    Interesting thread :upyeah:
