I dont know if any of you have run into this problem, but my 2003 999S has a Ducati Corse scree fitted which does not have the city running light fitted as standard. Until recently this posed no problem fo MOT's, however last time out I was told this was now no good as the light switch should be fully functioning if fitted. I looked at fitting a later model part where the headlight is hard wired on all the time, but did not find one. So came up with my own home solution. I took the switch apart, took off the rubber end, bent the metal pin (all whilst the switch is in the full headlight on position) put it back together, glued a nice piece of black plastic I found over the slot hole and then clad the plastic and face in carbon fibre sheet. I will post pictures but I think it looks good and solves the MOT problem as there is no switch anymore. A solution for anyone having a similar issue.
Yes it will fail.. I will take it off you hands as scrap!! Of course I speak bollocks. You don't have to have the running light and lets hear no more of it
That MOT tester - had you pissed him off at all? Slept with his sister? He seems to be behaving like a dick. I haven't had a running light in place on my 2003 999S since - well - ever. No issues with any MOTs in this respect, in the seven years its needed to pass them.
I know what you mean, my bike has had this screen since new and never been an issue, so when I had a problem I tried someone else and they said the same. I discussed it last year with some people a the Bristol Italian Fest, and they had oer come the issue with new switches. To be fair its better this way as its hard wired on now with no hint of the unit being a light switch, not even the markings are visible any more and it looks like the newer switch unit (but carbon fible). I just could not be bothererd to have to mess about trying different MOT testers.
there's always the appeal process. maybe new legislation come in but shouldn't be applicable to older machines
I never used the switch anyway as I always ride with main lights on anyway. I just thought no switch/no fail.
OR you could be fancy and retro-fit a running light into the headlight instead. I did something siimilar on my 748 headlights by adding LED rings around the main head light. As the 999 headlight can also be stripped down to remove the projector unit, you may be able to do the same. It cost about 99p from ebay and I wired it straight into the connector for the running light. HTH
What switch are we talking about?....My 2004 999S lights are on all the time and I cant switch them off,there is no on/off switch for the lights only a dip/main beam switch .
I had a 2005 749 and for the life of me I cannot remember if it had permanent on day lights. Surely if they are not equiped at time of manufacture they can never fail MOT because of lack of em? Bit like the old moggy minors were not fitted with seat belts so therefore when the laws changed regarding MOT and seat belts the moggy would never fail MOT
The original 999 has a switch for the headlight and the parking light. It has three positions: Off - Parking Light - Headlight
The issue for them was that there is now no parking light to the front but a switch for it. The back light lights up as it would and that was where they both became difficult.
Oh I see. Yeah I can understand where they are coming from. It could still fail though. I thought after a certain year all models of bike were fitted with parking lights and if they don't work then MOT failure. The Panni is a pain no parking light on ignition but done by pressing buttons A, B and C in a set sequence not that I will remember it
I didn't realise that the early bikes had a different switch,and technically I could see some anal MOT testers failing the bike ,I guess it all depends on whether the MOT station is'' bike friendly'',i tend to avoid garages that test cars as a priority.
there is a bit more to it than that. i.e the guys ticket and livelihood. most of the mot is opinion, obligatory lights aint one of them.
Yeah,i agree its a difficult one to get round.... it remains a fact though ,I know this through personal experience of similar issues, that some testers would pass it and some would fail it, if your tester passed it you aint gonna grass him to the testing standards board....
Now as soon as the ignition goes on, so do the head and tail lights. No switch exists so should be no fail. For both of them it was all about the switch. However I could not remove the unit as the starter button and engine kill switch are part of the same unit. So now no middle bit is seen to indicate it was a ever a lights switch.
not a bike tester so cant say for sure, been 6yrs since i did a car test.there not parking lights but obligatory position lights. mot's are a nightmare, even trying to get two vosa guys to agree on the definition of excessive is damn near impossible.
Later model Ducatis (just about everything!) has the correct switch gear you need, and have the correct wiring connectors on it! You can pick them up cheap off ebay. The correct number for the 999 one is 65040081B which is also used on other models. HTH.
