I know it’s a bit random, and different parts of the country will have different costs, but really looking at what people may pay for one. I’m considering getting some kind of unit to put some kit in. My gym kit, have an indoor golf practice area, maybe store a bike or two. so high ceiling, big enough for few bits of gym kit like running machine, bike machine, smiths machine, weight bench Any ideas? And anyone Gloucester way know of any?!
I have a slightly different approach, and rent a 20ft Shipping container at the yard where I keep my boat. Obviously no power unless I take my Gennie with me, but with a decent padlock it's very secure compared to a lock up garage door. I have 24hr access, the security gates are opened with a key fob, and there are security cameras everywhere as steeling Boats and Caravans is big business for certain members of society. It costs me @£100/month Caravan storage yards often have them to rent, the security is often better in terms of site access to undesirables, and they are usually cheaper than the dedicated household/business storage places. They are also much happier for you to actually use the container for a period of time rather than just store stuff as they are used to people using them as a workspace when working on their Boat/Caravan/Motorhome.
The golf practice cancels out most, otherwise expensive self storage or burglar attracting lock up garage are your usual options. I'd hang some hooks in the garage and forget the golf part.
In London I pay £114.40 per month for a lockup garage which is near a commuter rail station. It's only a single garage and no power or water.
Seek a farmer with storage units that is outside of business rates. We have lots of units at anything from £400>£150 p/m for forty-footers containers. Thats about the going rate but my landlord has a queue of people waiting to take over units.
That 10ft is unfortunately probably going to at least triple your monthly outlay. It certainly discounts a Container or normal household garage. As mentioned above, I'd be looking for a farmer with some 'unofficial' storage/business units for rent on a cash basis. But you won't be getting any guarantees with regard to security, weatherproofing, etc. It's a long way from you, but for comparison the yard where I keep my boat and rent a container does have a number of different sized business units for monthly rent, all have the height you need, but even for the smallest which is about the size of a double garage you're looking at £1000s p/m not £100s. The other consideration when renting something like this is commitment. There are two different contracts available for the units mentioned above. The cheaper option is to sign a contract for a year with a 3 or 6 month notice period thereafter. The more expensive option is to pay monthly and only have to provide a months notice to leave. The saving of option 1 over 2 can be significant.
