Crank Bearing Failure On 916 S4 - Should I Expect A Damaged Crank?

  1. Hi all.

I recently purchased a new set of bearings for engine reassembly and it dawned on me... Would there be any chance that my crank is damaged due to crank bearing failure?

I'm just waiting on my cases back with fresh bearings and Ive looked over everything and although I cannot actually see any damage is it worth sending it off for balancing so it can be spun up to ensure its not out of true?

Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I don't really want to get into the habit of assembly and disassembly of 916 engines. Replacement cranks don't seem too expensive (I have been looking for 900 crank to take mine out to 944 but I only find single phase ones) but my concern with a second hand crank its probably more of an unknown than mine is.

The engine was running prior to disassembly with with a nasty grinding noise that turned out to be the large bearings holding the crank

    Thank you,
    Alan

  2. Will be ok.
Just have bearing liners in the cases and cases checked/inspected

  4. I think st4 engines are made of gold according to eBay pricing. My first thought was get a replacement engine. They seem to be very desirable items.

In relation to the crank straightness I will probably have to disassemble and reassemble many times giving me the chance to turn the crank over. It looks like shimming the end float will give me the "opportunity" to do that.
