As the title says, I am contemplating replacing the oil seal that the end of the crank sits in, are there any tips for success? I am wondering if it is a wise move but the seal is around 30 years old now. I have no reason other than I am refreshing a lot of stuff in the engine at the moment. My current plan is the same as one I saw on here, to Dremel the seals metal band thin enough to collapse it inwards. I haven't touched it yet so could still leave alone
Curious as to what bike this is. The bush behind the seal looks like a glacier or oilite type bronze bush, which seems a strange application for a crank main bearing. In my experience crankshafts in Italian bikes are normally ball or roller bearings. If I have gone to the trouble of removing an engine and splitting the cases, I always replace the seals, unless I know that I have done them less than a few thousand miles previously. Hap'orth of tar and all that.
94 M900, the seal is for the oil feed into the end of the crank that goes to the big end bearings. The bush is where the end of the crank locates, the mains are big roller bearings.
Comes out easy, I just changed mine. Screwdriver underneath, little bit of pressure to pry it out. 20 second job.
Hopefully I have the same luck. I just pressed out the sight glasses and they did not want to come out, left a heap of rubber attached to the cover.
Should just pry out with a suitable screwdriver, however there should be a washer and circlip fitted there, have you removed them or were they not there when you stripped the cover off ? Worthwhile changing this seal as it’ll lose some oil pressure to the crank if it’s leaking, and it’s a leak that you can’t see. Is it a full strip down that you’re planning ?
Cheers, will give it a go. Yes the circlip and washer have been removed already. It's a full strip, currently doing some prep to paint the cases at the moment, after that is assembly time with all new bearings and seals
If you’re splitting the cases don’t forget to carefully check the crank oil gallery blanking plug, on mine it was loose enough to rotate with a finger and the threads were worn down with the rotating forces. This was a 94 build engine and only a couple of shards had previously been found in the oil strainer
Cheers, that was one of the reasons for stripping it down, it hadn't contacted anything but was loose. All nicely secured now.
Well I got it out, it wasn't easy though. It wouldn't budge so I ended up using a carbide burr to thin the steel ring then I was able to fold it in and eventually get some locking pliers on to lever it out.
Well done. Remember to remove the burr where you have bruised the casing at about 2 o'clock trying to lever it out, before you refit a new seal.
Went through the same pain in this thread. https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/clutch-housing-bush.76281/ I would leave the bush in if it is OK. Cheers Gaz
This reply is a little late to help but you can use an m20 nut and bolt as a puller to remove bush and seal together. please see my post. Removing Crank Shaft Oil Feed Bush And Seal From Clutch Cover
Removing Crank Shaft Oil Feed Bush And Seal From Clutch Cover Superb, I just wish you were a year earlier. Cheers Gaz
