Crap On The Internet...

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by JR45, Jan 7, 2016.

  1. As a curious question...
Why do people believe, and then repost, so much crap on the internet?
Time and time again I see all sorts of stories on Facebook and elsewhere that are what used to be called "urban myths". The vast majority are just plain stupid. Some give bad advice. Nearly all can quickly be checked against Snopes.com, Hoax Slayer or several other websites and shown to be rubbish... Everything from secret settings on mobile phones, to scare stories about fake unmarked police cars. 99.99% of it is utter drivel - and yet people believe it and repost without ever checking its validity.
    Maybe I'm just cynical...

    Thoughts anyone ?

  10. OK, I've shared this. How much did I win?

  11. Facebook I think is to blame for most of the mindless drivel- my daughter opened an account for me and I closed it 20 minutes later

  12. And Instagram..................WTF is that all about?

Pictures of yourself pulling silly faces while half the face is obscured by the phone, so obviously standing in front of a mirror at the same time, plus who the hell wants to see what you are having for dinner or to drink, every five minutes or so.....?

Seriously disturbed people that have got some sort of inferiority complex I reckon.

  15. Kinda goes really with the whole facebook argument (I don't have a facebook account) the wife does....spends a lot of time on there (well, I think she does) - the kids don't have them...I use good old email and have a twitter account (but really for watching bike racing related stuff) my twitter account doesn't have any references to me personally and doesn't have any family related pics on it either...

Im going to get one of these accounts....

  16. with you on that.

I resisted for a very long time until a few months back when I found that the only way I could get hold of the youngsters that I coach rugby to was via FB, then I got somebody to help set me up an account and asked them to make me as "invisible" as possible. my family got a bit peeved when I rejected their friend requests, then I explained that I am a miserable old ballsack who doesn't really want to be on facebook. they were fine after that.

  17. Its not just the internet/facebook generation is it.

The BBC/SKy news are responsible for spreading just as much shite. They love a bit of scare mongering. Be that freak weather, the immigrant situation, ebola about to eat everyone on the planet alive, its a whole host of topics their accuracy could be more than called into question over.

Im more concerned about the number of people who believe them tbh.

Gullible doesn’t even come close. Downright thick and devoid of any common sense whatsoever would be more apt.

I also think it helps them to appease their own bigotry with stuff like what happened to those poor women in germany over the new year. Suddenly every single immigrant/muslims a rapist.

Pretty sad really but i guess some of it can also be put down to pure laziness...i cant be arse to form my own opinion so ill believe anything the internet/news/newspapers tell me.

Thank god for people like David Icke and his ilk. ;)

  19. It's weird to me...
It's like people want to believe shite...
"We're giving away a new BMW. Like and share to win it" - how do the idiots think that is even possible? And why would anyone give one away?
"Steve Jobs will give you $1000 if you like and share this post" - No, you half-wits, he won't!
All of that is just "like farming" (Just Google it if you don't know what it is...)

Then there's all the crap "helpful information"...
"Entering your cashpoint number backwards will call the police" - utter crap! Of course it won't...
"Dialling 112 will get you through to the emergency services even if you haven't got a phone signal" - How the hell will it do that ? ! ? !

    And the paranoid rubbish too...
The fake unmarked police car stories.
The fake broken down car stories.
All the "don't ever stop to help anyone, they're all robbers / rapists / terrorists / kidnappers" garbage.

And I've lost track of all the bullshit "health" advice.
This is bad for you... This is good for you... This is the secret to eternal youth... All CRAP!

Mindless drivel - designed to keep the masses paranoid, terrified and confused. So, just the 21st century version of tabloid papers really...

Two rules that nearly always prove to be correct :
    1. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is".
    2. "If it sounds like utter bollox, it probably is".

  20. Facebook is whatever you make of it... I use it to keep in touch with friends that are spread all over the world, but nothing else. Some people live their whole lives on it - that's their choice.
Twitter seems to me to be full of braindead morons mindlessly following minor "celebrities" and hanging on their every, mostly stupid, word. But I've no doubt some people find it useful.

Every now and again the press/media want to attack whichever internet company is successful. First it was e-bay, then Facebook. The latest seems to be airbnb. Millions of perfectly good transactions every day all over the world, but as soon as one person has any kind of problem it makes half an hour on "Watchdog" and they go on as if the world is about to end. I've used e-bay, Facebook, amazon, airbnb and loads of other on-line companies and yes, occasionally there is a problem. But it's not like the old fashioned "go to the shop and buy it" method was ever perfect either...
