Crap remakes and covers ....

  1. I'm sitting here in my hotel in Dubai waiting for the taxi to take me to the airport. The only English language TV channel is Fox Movies and up next is 'Get Carter' ... great! One of my all time fave films :upyeah:

The familiar theme tune starts, but there's something not quite right about it .... and then .... WTF ?????

    Sly Stallone comes into shot!

How could they have the gall to even try to remake such a classic? How could Stallone possibly think he can fill Caine's shoes? ... and why on Earth did Michael Caine sign-up for a cameo? Words fail me. Clearly I am a grumpy old sod.

What about you? Any film remakes or song cover versions that make you despair?

  2. The Wicker Man - Edward Woodward - utterly magical original.

The re-make is a shit-faced abortion of a travesty and makes me weep blood just thinking of it.

    Good thread

  3. Good reply!

  4. The Taking Of Pelham 123, original was dope, remake is crap

Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band 'Express Yourself' is incredible, all covers of it are utter rubbish except the NWA one

  5. Any ruddy remake!! Leave it alone!
    The Italian Job .... Why?
Total recall?? Most horror films :(
Not seen a good remake yet.
Worst one The Shining ... The TV remake :( Jack certainly wasn't back!

  6. A) Because they don't care so long as it makes money
    B) He didn't worry about it. He just wanted the cheque.
    C) For the money - what else?

Note : Americans are so culturally challenged that they have to be the heroes of any movie (only exception is when an American actor/actress plays an English character, cf Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider). All movies have to be made American-centric. This is very typical of many French films which are remade by Hollywood so that they are fit for an American audience.

Good remakes are very rare. The most obvious example that springs to mind is Hendrix's version of Dylan's All Along the Watchtower.

  7. The most shocking remake I've heard, music-wise, was Comfortably Numb by Scissor Sisters. The shocking thing is the fact I like it. A lot.
    It works.

  8. Pharaoh Monches' cover of Public Enemy's 'Welcome To The Terrordome' was very good.

  9. Gone in 60 Seconds

  10. I'm with you on that one - I know I should hate it but actually love it almost as much as the original.

I did hear Seu Jorge covering Bowie's 'Life on Mars' and wondered if the death penalty could be re-instated for murdering a wonderful song.

  11. My god, where do you start with this..there are so, so , so, so, many....

what about when a truly shit film gets remade, and the second one is even worse?? imho 99% of films are utter shite, same goes for pop music.

Anyway, one of the cover tunes ive ever heard was back in the 90's. "stawberry fields", by Candy Flip

Candy Flip - Strawberry Fields Forever - YouTube

the kids vocal is weaker than teddy bear piss.

ive just had another listen after not hearing it for 16 years..its still the same amateur, monotonous, disjointed, irrelevant, bedroom produced, atonal, sterile, irritating, juvenile, insidious arse dribble that it was all those years ago...its a musical cut n' shut by 2 lispy ball-less, skinny arse white virgins who havent even got the good grace to either be gay or dead.

There are so very many shite songs, thats the trouble.

  12. Daft Punk's 'Faster, Better, Stronger' or what ever it's called is a steaming pile of turd next to Edwin Birdsong's 'Cola Bottle Baby', they shoulda just let it be

  13. On the other hand, there's the Alison Mosshart/Carla Azar cover of Tomorrow Never Knows from Sucker Punch. Wonderful.

Guilty listening pleasure ... The Hoxton Whores cover of Sunshine of Your Love. It kicks ass. Bah, the proper YouTube copy has disappeared.

  14. please tell me youre joking??
    This track is utterly facile.
It only works on the level of motivating me to connect the garden hose to the exhaust of my car, pipe it through the window and go for a joy ride into your living room and end the misery for both of us.

  15. Even though i agree with you 100% about that appalling film, in fact every single thing that Tony Scott touches is over edited, music video-telly advert-potatoe chip eating chyte, im going to have to hate you, purely because you used the word...DOPE.
Thats even more pseudo chich and pretentious than that chyte film.
This isnt fkn america..are you feeling me?

  16. I'm a retired rap star, I grew up talking different to wot you did, it's no big deal, I also say wack as an antonym.

  17. Funky, have a drink fella!

Yes, I like the Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb. The original PF is magnificent, goose-bumpingly moving and superb. The cover is facile, shallow and practically an insult ... and it is brilliant. It couldn't exist without the original, in my view, it makes no sense on its own but as a kick-in-the-goolies, in-your-face contrast to the original - it's fantastic. I can't explain it properly, it just hits a spot I didn't know existed.

  18. The scissor sisters comfortably numb :( :( sacrilege

  19. I know exactly what you mean, I like Old Dirty Bastard & Macy Gray's cover of Elton John & Kiki Dee's 'Dont Go Breaking My Heart'. The cover version is inferior to the original quality wise but the contrast between them both makes me like it.

The Selector's cover of the James Bond theme entertains.

  20. OK, how about Payback (with Mel Gibson) versus the original Point Blank, with Lee Marvin? How are we on that remake?

My opinion - one is an absolute classic, which I rarely stay awake all the way through, while the other is a pretender which I am fully capable of watching (and enjoying) twice a month. Discuss.
