916 Cush Drive/carrier Differences?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Messer, Sep 4, 2018.

  1. So, fitting up a rental carrier and a better condition carrier from a 998 and I have hit a difference.. as per the pics, the original 916 carrier spline depth is 30mm - on the 998 carrier it’s 36mm. And also the rear of the 916 carrier is held in place with a circlip.

    What’s happening here then?

  2. Also, the carrier hits the chain adjuster - so think I’ve answered my own question here that the 998 carrier is different to the 916 carrier!??

  3. Yep have different part numbers too. Original one 16010211a new one 1601021b

Just to be sure I’ve not missed something?

  4. later type doesn't have the circlip (as the groove used to crush) and it has a conical spacer instead part number 71410411A

  5. Cheers just come across that! Thought I was going mad! Will get one ordered up. Anyone got a spare Cush drive rubber? I only need one :)

  6. Indeed, my old one wore the circlip groove until the carrier was rubbing against the adjuster.

As above newer (998) version is compatible with older bikes but needs a spacer. You can also machine the back off an old style carrier to work as the new one, spacer still required though.

Some pics to show the differences etc.

  7. As for cush drives, I swapped for a renthal carrier after one of the cush drives 'popped' out the back and ground the adjuster some more (had to replace the hub that time). I fitted new cush drives at the same time and although the one that popped was no good I'm fairly certain the others are knocking around somewhere.

They're used of course but should work OK especially with a Renthal carrier that should have the lip to stop them popping out.

If I can find one you're welcome to it.

  8. Thats great, thanks! I have a renthal carrier but funnily enough it doesnt have the lips behind it to stop them popping out.. they just push through easily?

  9. I had one like that, I think it was an older model? that was the one that the cush drive popped out the back when it separated internally.

I'm certain I've seen someone post about drilling the side and fitting grubscrews to hold the cush in? might work OK?

I tried staking them by using a centre punch around the edge of the cush but it came out anyway (with a bang) so I bought a new one that had the lip because I didn't want the problem again and new hubs (and bearings) aren't cheap.

As it happened I found an as new used hub on ebay and had been using the old one for a while as although a little thin on the adjuster ring it was still OK.

  10. yes, I read this. Its weird there are 2 or 3 ridges that stop the cush's backing out but also 2 or 3 that can back out which is a bit odd.. I bought it used not knowing there are 2 types. back to the drawing board I will buy another one as this is the type of thing that will play on my mind.. I'm a fit once and forget type of guy

  11. Found old cush drives, obviously not new but look to be OK. If you want one PM me your address and I'll put one in the post, unless you can collect from Leics.?
