In light of a recent thread concerning the removal of Cush drives i thought someone may find the following techniques I’ve employed in removing them from my monster 1000 useful. There are three basic methods depending of the difficulty encountered and whether you wish to re-use them and don’t want to apply heat. In certain circumstances it’s impossible to remove them without destroying them. In this particular instance the drives have covered 150k and went through 13 continuous winters so there was a considerable amount of oxide growth at the rear of drives but I employed all three methods to remove them. Method 1: No heat applied. Manufactured extractor used to pull bush from housing. Worked with one bush but failed for other 5. Note: same tool used to pull new bushes into housings. Method 2: Centering guide turned and used to centre pilot drill for 32mm hole saw. Worked a treat leaving outer shell. Heat applied to hub area and slide hammer used to extract shell. Downside - required heat discolours paint. Not a problem in my case as having wheels powder coated. Method 3: Same as method 2 with the exception of heat. In this method I used a dremel or equivalent and cut through the shell at an angle. Once cut through I used a blunt drive to knock the shell out distorting the shell but preserving the paint. Method 1 Method 2 Method 3
