After lots of thinking about what to do with my screen I landed a bargain standard screen on eBay last week, and thought I’d try cutting it down to Pikes Peak kind of size. I was in the garage on Friday afternoon fitting some Evotech guards, got those done, and started thinking about whether I should just cut down the one I have. I got a load of masking tape and covered over the top half of the screen, and started making measurements, and marking where I wanted to cut. It was slightly harrowing actually attacking my screen with the jigsaw cutter, but it did the job nicely. I used a little sanding wheel on a Dremel to smooth it all over, followed by some sanding to get it neat. It’s not completely 100% even, having been cut by hand, but it really is pretty close, and I’m very pleased with how the bike looks with it. I’m 6’2” tall, and was getting an awful lot of very noisy turbulence with the stock screen. This seems like a definite improvement, and I haven’t so far found that wind in my face (rather than going over my head) to be a disadvantage. The reality is the wind didn’t go over my head, hence why it was so noisy. I didn’t want a taller or flip-up screen, so I’m pretty happy with this solution.
nice job ! I'm thinking of putting a short screen on my enduro too. The PP carbon screen on my 2012 multi has a much flatter top to it, as most of the earlier ones seem to. I wonder if that makes it better or worse, having a curved top... How close is the shape of your one to the Enduro Pro one ?
I had no idea that the Enduro Pro had a different screen! I was outside the garage and did a Google Image search for Pikes Peak screen, and then sort of sketched a rough shape onto the masking tape. That's pretty much all there was to it.
I used them to carry a basic tool kit, some cable ties, and electrical tape. In other words, all the stuff needed to effect a temporary repair to a broken hand guard, next time I drop it. Also, very handy for waterproofs, and spare gloves. £40 from lomo.co.uk - and I can confirm that they will survived being dropped onto harsh Dartmoor granite without being damaged, and are fully waterproof.
Very effective they are too! Hope to see you soon mate - and not just to come and help patch the bike up next time it has a gravity induced moment again!
Having now googled the Enduro Pro, I can confirm very close indeed to the shape of that screen. Literally only took me about an hour to do, and it cuts very well with a jigsaw.
