999 Cutting Up The Sub Frame

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Cream_Revenge, Jun 29, 2016.

  1. Hey

I want to cut my subframe down so i can fit a single seat unit.

Can you clever people who have done this put some pics up and give me any hints and tips please?

Can i do it in the garage with just a hack saw?

    TIA

  2. Yes but it will be labour intensive. And you'll need a good file.
I did post some photos on a thread. But can't remember which one.

  3. Easy peesy. Grinder with cutting disc and grinding disc. Offer up mono piece. Mark, cut, grind smooth, then powder coat. Done.

  5. CR, I have a grinder and slitting discs you can borrow? Very thin cutting discs that cut very easy...
You have to be careful not to bend them cutting.

I'd like to see where your 996 Showa forks are in the top yoke, also would you be prepared to lend me a Ducati ride height tool if you have one... I can provide proof of address and sign for it :)

  6. Sorry mate, don't have one. If the weather ever gets better I'll come and show you the bike, or you are welcome to pop down.

I do have a grinder but it's quite big and heavy and I've not really used it. May have to find something to practice on.

  7. I can pop down? I have to meet the accountant this morning but I might be free this afternoon, tomorrow perhaps of Sunday... have to check my diary. I can grab some bits from my workshop, not sure what I have in stock at the moment.

Cutting with a grinder is fine, just get some scrap as you say... put it in a vice and get comfortable , as in body position. Keep steady.

Personally I would not use a grinding disc to finish, ok for shaping but not for finishing (unless it's ends of tube) deep lines can show through paint.

As above sanding discs... but if it is tube of box section you are working with, you might be able to just file and hand sand with a few different grits...

  8. You are welcome to come down and have a look how my 996 is set up whenever you like. I work from home so can normally find 1/2 hour for a cuppa.

Don't worry about grinder, not ready for it yet.

  9. we are talking grindette here,, 5", not 9" ( unless you are well experienced ) and gloves
