Cylinder bolt oil leak.

  1. I think I posted this before but I cant remember and I could do with some input.

My 749 developed a slight oil weep from the threads of the cylinder bolt/nut that holds the cylinder to the engine casings as circled in the image below.

I would upload a better image but its dark now.

I know the nut has a washer under it and from the manual I know there is an O-ring in there too but is the O-ring under the nut with the washer sealing the thread, or inside the cylinder?

Im guessing the O-ring may have perished and is letting oil past but has anyone come across this before? Anything to worry about or just one of those foibles? I noticed more oil than normal had collected after tonight ride (normally just a drop) but I would like to sort this out.

Anyway, when the engine is running you can see the occasional bubble come from the thread above the nut and it would leave a little oil around the nut/washer but tonight I noticed it had pooled towards the external cover so im not happy.

A few weeks back I checked that it hadnt simply came loose by checking tightness with a spanner but it seemed solid to me and I wasnt about to give it the beans. Its a right b@r$tard to get to also so thats another issue alltogether in terms or torquing the thing.

    What should I do?

Undo it and nip it back up with a new washer/O-ring?

I was going to let it wait until it goes in for a service but i would like to sort it sooner rather than later really.

    Cheers

    JC

  2. O-rings gone hard... They will all cook themselves after time, just about to do one of my cam seals? Part of the joys of Doocat ownership!

"Its not an oil leak! Its hot! Its sweating!"

  3. Exactly.

Does anyone have an idea if this is the supplying channel to the cam/rockers or the drain?

I checked the manual and I couldnt tell.

Obviously im just thinking about the top end & the oil its getting.

EDIT: I tell a lie, its the oil drain channel.

  4. When the O ring goes it usually pools on top of the crankcase behind the cylinder. The nut you have circled is above the head if its bubbling around that then you may have a head gasket on the way out.

  5. Thanks for the reply.

I rang Forza Italia (they service my bike) and discussed it through with them and they said the same thing. There isnt any trace of water in the oil but I guess the word "yet" is underused.

I noticed a bit of oil pooling after last nights blast and when I went out to check on it again after posting this it had disappeared. It has been going down the gap in the coolant housing/ plate that bolts to the side of the cylinder and I would bet when they have a look the recesses in the cylinder behind the housing will be full of oil as it seems to be very slowly leaking out of the lowest part and has discoloured the paint.

Bad news is its a top end off job but seeing as my belts need doing and it needs a service it shouldnt be too bad as most of the work is combined in terms of disassembly & belts. Touch wood it all goes smoothly and they dont find any problems.... oh boy.

I will keep it updated when it goes in on the 13th of July.... tempting fate??? Think I might buy some lucky heather
