Cylinder Head Bolts Snapped.

  1. Always thought my mkIII 1994 superlight was in the era of the stronger cylinder head bolts, but turns out vertical cylinder has snapped one bolt.
Decided to get all cylinder bolts changed at the same time, whilst sorting a few other problems like front floating discs carriers, front wheel bearings etc,etc.... She is almost 30yrs old after all!
My engine looks like it's been stored underwater, anybody got any tips on making it look more presentable without full engine strip for vapour blasting? Not after eat your dinner off engine finish, as it's a rider not a polisher.

  2. When you say "turns out" did the engine not show any symptoms of a snapped bolt?

For the cases you can definitely do a lot with degreasing, a wire brush (on a drill) and some sharp scraping tools. Check out my rebuild thread, I vapour blasted the heads, barrels and other pieces, but decided to manually clean the cases...it will take time though! (the best case paint is also in that thread) :upyeah:

  3. I noticed oil around head after ride, on closer inspection I also noticed thumb nail plate/washer on top of cylinder head facing outward. I could grab cylinder head bolt & lift upwards, guessing it's snapped? . Think might remove tank so I can pull bolt properly & check end. Performance was OK, kept up with a 100bhp ktm 790.
