Cylinder head nuts....

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by comfysofa, Apr 9, 2014.

  1. Does anyone have a way of getting them off....ive got some stainless head nuts to go on but the old ones are in such a place where you cant get a socket in there (im talking the front cylinder). Sound like a broken record now but these are probably the worst thing on the bike to corrode - theyre rusted so badly im dreading getting them off.

Went to riders to see if I could buy the tool to get them off....fucking 80 quid....they (Ducati)expect me to pay 80 quid to buy a tool to take off the shitty nuts they put on there in the first place!

I did see some sort of flat tool ages ago which from recollection cost about 15 quid...I could stomach that just to get the things off...but cant find it anymore...

My last resort is to take it to my wife's workplace (shes a dental technician) and has access to a wide variety of small cutting tools and though if I slice the nut down the side I can then just twist a screwdriver in there to get it/them off....

The vertical cylinder head isn't so bad, almost fine but theyre coming off anyway plus theyre easier to get to...

Nice if anyone can offer some insight into removing them...

  2. That's the one....! - ill mail them now...cheers!

  3. Some earlier head nuts are 15mm. I got a combination spanner (ring/open ended) and took a grinder to it.

  4. Ah - I was considering the grinder option but my track record with grinders isn't good....as I say wife has some nice cutting tools at her workplace....I used to use to take in cylinder heads years ago to gas flow them...

  5. Bit of a breakthrough.....was in the garage putting the tax disc on and tried a ropey old ring spanner which looked like it fitted and it did, just....replaced 6 of them but got stopped on the upper cylinder belt side...good result....reckon when I come do the belts I'll be able to get them...

  6. torqued? :Watching:

  7. Well, no, but I did take note of how tight they were....just got to work, brought "the" ring spanner with me to check once the engine has cooled down. Also used some thread lock as well....to be honest as you cant get anything on there that I can see that's socket related im not sure how you would torque them up....

  8. You can attache a torque wrench to the flat bar thingy..:upyeah:

  9. Yeah - think that's what ill be doing....

just ordered one....the old nuts that came off were 14mm, the new ones 15mm....I don't have a manual - what is the torque value??

  10. From what you have just written I don't think you should be allowed any where near a spanner, please put it down now and step away from the bike !!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Well, its still running fine at the moment.

  12. Hi Comfy,
You're Hyper must be like Trigger's broom!
    Cheers,
    Moses.

  13. Yup. Its had a bit of work done to it but it's all for the better....a bit ocd I think over the years as when 20 years ago when I had bikes and no garage living in a bed sit working on the garden path etc etc no matter how much I tried I could never keep anything clean as the weather would always win.

Now I've got a garage, decent bikes etc etc and I can keep stuff clean I tend to look at stuff and think....yeah, well if I get that coated or swap that bolt out then it'll stay clean....rear swing arm pinch bolts....literally...in a min when I go out to the garage....waiting on some titanium bolts for the Roadlok to replace the shite galvanized ones....haven't really started on the RSV yet as that just hasn't corroded any where near as much as the hyper....

  14. Hi Comfy,
To be honest you've spurred me on - I have started replacing all the rusty bolts on my hyper.
    Cheers,
    Moses.

  15. Heh....you'll have quite a lot to do....but having said that....its your eye that's drawn to the rusty corroded stuff...pics please.

  16. Only pics I have are from the service last year when the issues were encountered whist doing the valves.

  17. That'll be the final job....engine out to get it coated....not doing that til something goes bang though....and yeah that's what most of my bolts looked like...

  18. Having said that the tank will be coming off as I think the fuel sender is faulty....causes the engine error light to come on now and again...

  19. I thought your sensor fault was fixed based on the other thread.
By the way - I cheat - I get most of my problems fixed when my bike goes in for a service. I have done some of my modifications myself but others I leave to experts.
