Talk to an old Luddite about DAB for home Hi-Fi. I really enjoy listening to CDs etc on my 25yr old Kenwood separates system that I treated myself to 'back in the day', I also use it to listen to the radio using the FM/AM/LW Tuner. But in my car, workshop, office and kitchen I'm using small portable DAB Radios, and listening to stations like Planet Rock that are not available on FM. I've lost touch with the whole Hi-Separates thing, having until now just not needed an upgrade. I want to keep the old Kenwood gear, it still sounds fantastic, so am considering replacing the old tuner with something more modern, but don't know much about the newer brands or what I really need and don't need in terms of features. Lady Nasher would like to bluetooth music from her phone, and I believe the newer units will receive more stations as the range has widened, but I might be wrong. I think I need DAB+ for all the newer stations. But do I really need Internet Radio? I don't know what advantages it has. These are just examples at this early stage, not ones I'm seriously considering: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Majority-Fitzwilliam-Hi-Fi-Tuner-Bluetooth-Black/dp/B07XRW5F54/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=dab+tuner&qid=1664194451&sr=8-4&th=1 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234393132427?hash=item3692eb5d8b:g:RAgAAOSwvd9h8LOv&amdata=enc:AQAHAAAAoOGciCJjxuZZSYkSVQ9YpyLlb26no16ty5i/bdTxeQJ4YgIQ55zMqE89D5xk33qsSVyydxCFbtHHJmCYo9WE2qlEQu/ftK4A9cEHrq3YHudWz15EJZlvRJddNnvwvEjn4D1iRWCeZf1rceKhBZf+Yq6GtYEtltnuq8k+avHdcFtCOKo0Z29EwdkHcx0QoQ/cRBG+gnkJOTvFVBlsLyk/GeA=|tkp:Bk9SR5DCl5zvYA
You only get what you pay for. A decent AV will allow you to use all your favourite separates and give you bluetooth connectivity, internet radio, spotify and odious amounts of crap you'll not use I went Denon (AVR-x3600H) but they do quality budget as well. Andy
What about updating your separates to be Bluetooth enabled and use internet radio instead of DAB via your phone or tablet. https://www.amazon.co.uk/1Mii-Bluet...t=&hvlocphy=9046740&hvtargid=pla-643820704247
Thanks Guys. I really don't want to replace my lovely old Kenwood Amp, it puts out a great sound to my Mission speakers and I would rather just supply it with an output from a tuner that supports DAB+. Relying on the internet for anything here always leads to disappointment, we're at the end of at least two hundred yards of 30yr old copper wire with no chance of an upgrade any time soon. The last time we asked we were quoted @12K per household to upgrade, and we'd all have to agree. It's one of the many disadvantages of living in a Un-adopted road. It's not about the actual upgrade to the network, it's the cost of digging up the road, paths etc and putting them back to an acceptable standard. For the same reason we have to have Sky Satellite not Cable.
What about your telly? I get BBC R6 on my TV and just send it to my amp. In garage, I use my crappy ex work laptop, direct that to some old PC speakers or i'll use my iphone and visit BBC Sounds etc...
I like my existing amp too, so got something like this- CAMWAY 192kHz Digital to Analog Converter with Headphone Amplifier Built-in Bluetooth V5.0 Receiver Supports output Volume Adjustment with Power Adapter https://amzn.eu/d/8D5SHda creates a Bluetooth input to existing amp then options open to get internet radio or DAB.
A thumbs up for the Planet Rock station ( looks like we might have something in common afterall ), i don't have access unfortunately only when visting a friend on the coastline listening to his DAB system which i purchased from ebay for him, anything after this station is Totally Shite in my opinion.
Radio Paradise ....... excellent .. Internet based and has four streams....main..rock..mellow and global. It is free and based on voluntary contributions. The streams are made available in hi res. It was started up and is run by a nice bloke and his missus in California....purely for the love of it.
I have a Pure DAB radio plugged into my amp as it has phono outputs, plus a Bluetooth receiver that plugs into the amp's 3.5mm input jack so I can 'amplify' my phone, laptop, etc. Perfect for me.
I ended up ordering one of these direct from Majority: https://www.majority.co.uk/music-systems/fitzwilliam/ It mainly has excellent reviews and they are a UK company. It would appear to do all I need and a lot more, but I might need to buy an external DAB/FM antenna as I want to put it in my separates Cabinet. The offer price on the website of £139.95 was reduced down by another 10% because I registered for an account, and next day delivery was an additional £2.99. So £128.95 all in inc next day delivery. Note that price is significantly cheaper than the cheapest new one on Ebay which is £169.99. Will update when I get time to set it up over the weekend.
