The Multistrada's 1200 specification highlights the "Ride by Wire" technology, Then why do they have 2 throttle cables?, the Triumph Explorer & BMW K1600 along with others have ride by wire and they only have an electrical cable for transmitting the throttle position the the Bikes ECU brain. Just a Thought!!!!
there are no daft questions , if no daft questions are posed then expect a hooooooooooooge screw up further down the line ................
The cables will go to the throttle bodies (or somewhere prior to this) and this will have the potentiometers that will then relay that signal to the ECU and then to the throttle bodies themselves. Two cables because one opens and one closes so if the opener snaps then you can still force the throttles closed so hopefully the computer doesnt cause a tizz and you end up in the kitty litter like Pedrosa.
I forget where I read this, but it was in one of the releases when the bike first came out. They use cables as it feels more like a conventional throttle. There are two potentiometers to ensure if one fails the bike is still ridable.
The cables are connected to what Ducati describe as a "Throttle twistgrip position sensor" (APS) mounted on the horizontal throttle body. This has 2 potentiometers in it both of which are connected to the ECU. Mounted on the vertical throttle body is a "Starter motor - position sensor / ride-by-wire (TPS/ETV). Basically a stepper(?) motor and a TPS. The TPS also has 2 potentiomters in it, as John W say above, presumably in case one fails you won't lose control. Presumably the ECU reads the output from the APS and adjusts the throttle opening with the ETV so that the TPS output matches that of the APS.
Probably showing cables at the bars as that is what people are used to seeing and feel comfortable with it, not sure how people feel about realising they have no control over the throttle it is all down to wires and resistors !!
You have illustrated a very good point here ! , May have something to do with the fact that many Multis including mine suffer from over revving for a few minutes after a cold start up , Ride by wire ! and two cables as well of course !
Knowing what Multi riders are like, they will be hidden behind the bar-muffs in the winter and pipe tobacco smoke in the summer. So I don't think the will get seen. Plus wind-blast will be making their eyes water, so they often ride squinty eyed.
