Datatool Evo - Self Install Alarm?

  1. Used to be called the Datatool Demon. Not very good. Just 2 wires to connect. Put the 99 quid towards an approved alarm.

  2. I put one of those on my MV to replace the dreadful OEM alarm that failed after two weeks and one wet ride. Just needed an alarm as a deterrent for people either fiddling with, moving or knocking over the bike when I parked up on tour. I fully accept that scrotes will take your bike whatever the deterrent and overnight always backed it up with a decent disc lock and when at home or somewhere I parked regularly an f-off lock and chain. I also had a tracker fitted as a belt and braces job. If you want an immobiliser then you'll need to go elsewhere, I think there's a model higher up the same range.

It lasted without any issues over the 2+years and 18,000 miles I had the bike. In terms of reliability I've see a Youtube video of one of these physically abused with a lump hammer and put in a bucket of water and still continuing to work. The key is competent fitting, most alarm problems in my experience are due to this being done without care.

If you want to declare it to your insurers and try and get a discount then you'll need to have it fitted by an approved installer. Please note that, when insuring the Multistrada, my broker pointed out that after the 2nd security device it makes no difference to the premium, not sure if this is the same with all underwriters so worth checking. As a result I've only declared the factory immobiliser and tracker (which they insisted I have) as they both qualify and are always on the bike and active when the ignition is off. Of course I do use physical security but it avoids any arguments if I did need to make a claim.

  3. Thanks Bumpkin; :) useful info, especially with insurance premiums unlikely to drop with multiple devices onboard. My insurance is quite cheap as it is - something to do with age (not sense).

I previously purchased one of Datatool's products and this alarm was on offer - so thought it may be worth a punt, hence my post. But I already have a tracker onboard and its physically manacled well and truly when stored. The alarm would be useful if I ride it to work although I may just get a h/duty disk lock instead as I generally don't leave my M/C's unattended (for long, if at all) when out (boring - yep). Mind I've only ridden the duc 4 times since buying it due to rain and now CV19. When bored I tend to get restless and think too much....:thinkingface::mask:

  4. To be fair no alarm (or even tracker) will stop your bike being stolen by Pro's, all you can do is maybe alert yourself that someone is messing and hope the noise scares them from doing more.

The Evo may deter scroats and the like, it will certainly give you a bit of piece of mind maybe. The biggest niggle to me on that alarm is another remote to put on the keychain. If you can deal with that, go for it :)

If you have a high end bike - and most Ducati's do fall into that category, it needs chaining to something immovable with a heavy chain and lock...even then if they REALLY want yours, it'll go. Carrying a HD lock and chain is not really practical so we need something that is.

I have two Xena alarm disc locks - one for each end. They are both sold secure approved but I never declare them on my insurance. I use the alarm variant of disc lock to hopefully stop me being a doofus and trying to ride off with one on :) If I go into Europe, they go with me cos they are easy to carry. They will stop anyone wheeling it away at least, they'd need to lift it and someone would likely hear.

At the end of the day tho - its insured, that's why we have insurance. Make it harder, giver yourself a bit of peace of mind and you have done your bit

  5. Roadlok, thick Krytonite cable and lock when on tour/f-off big lock and chain at home with ground anchor. Alarm in the hope that I'll know about someone fiddling with the bike and tracker if the worst happens to give a little hope that I'll get it back.
