I'm thinking of getting one for the summer, just for local stuff and slow cruises on the Imola. I like the look of them, and before anyone says it, yes they will cause my skull to crack like an egg and they're not road legal! Has anyone worn one, if so what are they like? They're not dear, just over a couple of hundred quid, but I don't want to buy one for it to sit on a shelf in my workshop!
Mmmmmm, obviously not popular on here! I showed my wife the picture, she thinks I will look like a numpty!
I know the risks well enough, I was shown a picture of the possible results on a medics course once. Not pretty....
I had one in black and silver. Never wore it much as not safe or legal. They look great and are well made. Gave it to my mate who has a restored Messerschmidt 3 wheeler, looks good with that! Love the tri-colore version.
Your point is well made Mr R. I have a Davida Classic and Halcyon goggles which I intended to use, as you say, on sunny days. Trouble is I dont feel confident, suspecting that the relaxed sunny day runs are no safer than any other. Just a state of mind I guess. Steve
Thanks both Steve's I'm still not sure, maybe I'll have to try one on and see how it feels. I've never ridden in an open face before, let alone a pudding basin so it'll be weird, but I still fancy one!
It's a funny old thing, confidence with helmets. On a tour of Colorado once, the bike rental guy said, "Oh do you want a helmet? You don't have to wear them here". I looked at him like he was daft and of course took the helmet. Thing was, on a dead quiet lane, I took it off and rode without it for a while, thinking, "On this quiet road, it'll be fine.". I didn't put it back on again for the whole trip, including some 100mph blasting down the interstate! So my point is, you feel VERY exposed for a while in no helmet or a low-protection helmet but after a while grow totally used to it and wonder what all the fuss is about. Is this sensible? No, probably not. Is it your personal choice, absolutely. BTW, I'm now back to wearing my Arai and Shark at all times and can't imagine not wearing a helmet!! Funny how your perception changes.....
I would like to make a thing of choice i have a roof open face that a ware in short trips but you do ride with more care bit just having jeans and t shirt on i would not go for a proper ride with outall my gear on, same as seat belts
I thougt i'd try an open face lid a few years ago, just for a change, lasted about 10 minuites before i went back home to swap for my usual full face, flies taste awfull.
Takes me back this talk of open face helmets, in my early days of biking there was no helmet laws, I would ride the bike up town quite often without a helmet, always wore one on longer journeys though, it was quite funny to se my brother riding off with a fag in his mouth, I did like the open face with goggles and the white silk scarf around the mouth though. Steve
Helmet? Pah! Seriously though, don't you think them pudding baasin things look a but gay? Better off with a Jet style like the other Davida one. I had countless fairly high speed crashes in various AGV and Cromwell variations and the only facial damage I ever picked up was a broken jaw, and that was headbutting a car roof hard enough to paralyse my arm. Be prepared for some fairly significant pain from rain and hail, mind.
