848 Db Killers - Need To Hit 98 Db With Race Pipe...(for One Day)

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by comesunt, Apr 16, 2014.

  1. Hi all,

I've got a full race termi system on the 848 and matching ECU. It came with dB killers that I'm guessing will take it down to 98 dB (or below) - They have never been in...

I want to do a track day where the limit is 98 followed the next day where it is 105 (both at Donnington) Keen to learn the track a bit more on the 98 day ... Do I:

1.Pop in dB killers that I have, it will probably pass the test, but will the bike run like a pig? or more importantly, make her sick?

    2. Refit standard system for the day (a lot of work, only to reverse the following day for a 105 dB session?

    3. If the standard issue dB killers are less than 98 dB, are there 98 version available? I've had a quick google but no joy...

    4. Ride the another bike for the 98 day?

    4. Any other option??

All opinions are very welcome and much appreciated...

    Bob

    Thanks,

    Bob

  2. killers in and unless your very talented it wont be very noticeable

  3. Baffles and a load of wire wool around the baffle, depending how far down it reaches, then remove padding after test and put baffles in for riding

  4. For donnington, baffles in and take it easy down the start/Finish straight. That's where the main sensor is for the 98db day. 105db day take them out. You'll be fine.

Donny is a ride-by so you should have no issues.

I've done it with a full system on an 848 with no problems.

Disclaimer- not my fault if you fail;)

  5. Ok, Many thanks for replies and advice... Just wanted opinions if she'll run sick...

I'm guessing the killers are 98dB so will go for that...

    Cheers,

  6. Maybe not too much help but I've got the cans on my Corse and put the baffles in for the first time last week as I was taking some advanced training and wanted to hear the guy and avoid upsetting him as he'd be following me closely for 2 or 3 hours at a time.

They make a big difference to the volume, but the tone is pretty much the same out on the road. Way quieter than without them though. Bike seems to run fine with them in but it loses some attitude so they're coming out as soon as I get a chance to do it. No issues as far as I've found so far but I much prefer the unbaffled sound. :) I'd imagine you'll make the 98dB with baffles in - put it this way, if you don't then the stock pipes won't either so I'd just go with the baffles if it was me.

  7. some of the 'attitude' loss is due to volume. A loud bike always seems to be going faster: if you use earplugs ride without them and you'll see ;)

  8. You're spot on. I like loud bikes and the 848 definitely sound better with race pipes on than without, just more free-breathing and smooth. The baffle works fine but it doesn't seem quite as happy as it does when they're not fitted.

I always wear earplugs when I'm out on the bike and on the occasions when I've ridden the 848 without them it's really bloody loud, especially in town.

  9. Best trick with the baffles is to cut the ends off.

Stops the cans getting too hot and burning the carbon under prolonged, hard use as the gas can flow better but doesn't affect their performance.

  10. same here iv two sets of baffles, one set standard and one set with the ends cut off, the standard are quiet,no baffles are noisy and the cut ones are in between......:upyeah:

  11. Instead of faffing about changing systems / exhausts inbetween the two sessions you could just do the noisy day with a quiet set up? Will the missing extra small percentage of horsepower that the noisy set up will liberate really spoil your day if it's not there?

  12. Many thanks for all the replies....

After taking in the advice I'll pop the baffles in for the quite day, and seems like I'll hardly notice...

Interested in the "cutting the pipe off the baffle advice" but as I only have one set of dB killers, I'll probably leave them as they are....

    Thanks again,

    Bob

  13. You only cut the domed end off by about 1". Do a session then feel how hot your cans are.

Cutting that inch off let's them run a it cooler without really compromising their noise reduction.

  14. Ok, Thanks. I might take the dremel and see how it goes... Intrigued about the physics behind this idea?
