Just got round to fitting a dominator decat mid pipe to my 2014 1200 MTS with a GRmoto slip on but I’m disappointed with how it sounds. Anyone else been in this position? It’s quite loud but that’s not the problem, it just doesn’t sound nice. I have a 749 with full termignoni exhaust and that sounds beautiful, am I wrong to think I was going to get a sound similar to this?
I know nothing about the 749 exhaust but if it has 2 discrete, full length pipes, horizontal and vertical, that enter the end can, you'll not get the same sort of sound out of the Multistrada 2 into 1 exhaust. Andy
Different pipes. If the GR is the same size as the one on my GS, it'll sound nothing like the Termignoni. I have the baffle in now as it was way too loud but haven't tried it since. I had the full system with Upmap on my 2014 MS and it sounded awesome. I miss that sound!
Is it a lack of depth to the sound that you don’t like, or is it something else? The reason I ask is I am likely to be doing the same over the winter. PS. Did you have any problems with removing/loosening the manifold studs and how did you approach that job?
I can’t quite put my finger on it, it sounds kind of raspy or whistley if that’s a word. Almost like it’s a huge single. I’m not sure I want to keep it and go back to standard. As for the header studs I took advice from others and soaked in penetrating fluid and very slowly bit by bit loosened them off, they were no drama. It all went together relatively easily.
I had listened to a few youtube videos of grmoto end cans and I had remarked on the whiney/whistley sound that came from them. Maybe it’s the end can alone that is causing this type of sound and not the decat??? For that reason, I bought a used Arrow can that I will get round to fitting over the winter. I have to say though, I was sorely tempted by the grmoto as it seemed reasonable quality and a great price. Is there any way you could try another different end can with your decat, to identify the source?
I can’t fault the quality of the GRmoto end can, actually for the price it’s really very good. And I got it for only £90 so pounced at it. I may try a different end can.
well this arrived and is fitted, quick ride out today and it’s miles better sounding than the GRmoto silencer. Not taken the baffle out yet so I’m expecting it to be loud. As it is though, it adds a nice deep sound which is not offensively loud. All good so far.
Hi Paul - Is there any chance you could put a sound file or even better a video of it up so I can decide which way to go with my 1260s . Not sure wheter to gut a cat I have spare ot get the dominator pipe to use with either a Termi end can or Leo Vince which I have in the garage . Cheers Mick
Hi Mick Yeah I can do that but I will say, just get a dominator decat pipe if you’re already considering it as the weight saving alone is worth it.
Hi Paul - The only thing putting me off the dominator or others similar is that I do quite a bit of touring and I want to be sure I can keep the noise to a level that won't do my head in after an hour or two on the motorway or A roads . I don't want a constant loud drone that earplugs won't keep at bay. . I do agree about the weight and more free flowing exhaust but the noise is a consideration, esp abroad where they monitor it more . Thanks Mick
I was out on mine yesterday and was riding for about an hour and the noise was perfectly reasonable to my ears. I didn’t once think I’m being obnoxious. This was with the baffle in on an arrow thunder end can. It was only marginally louder than the standard setup. Need some time to get a clip of mine like you asked.
