Just wondered if decats, after market exhausts and tuning affect the insurance of the bike. In the first instance is it something one should report to one's insurance company and secondly. if one does. does it affect the premium.
Contact your current insurer and ask them if there's a premium for fitting a different exhaust or go on to one of the main insurers' websites and look for a quote - you'll normally find a section dealing with 'accessories or aftermarket parts' with a drop down box. See what the difference is when you add the various parts. Moocow's absolutely right when it comes different companies and their approach to exhausts but they will all probably look to walk away if you haven't informed them of a modification.
Most companies would only be looking at if the mod enhances performance. If its a replacement that is road legal (your not obliged to use OE parts) you will find that is fine. Mods (cosmetic or functional)wont even attract additional loading if agreed consequential loss. If you actually want them covered , then as most things in life you will have to pay.
Is there a source for that please, and assume that relates to motorcycles as they tend to pick and choose when a bike is included in a statement containing vehicle (eg Vehicle emmission test). I have had a look around but could not find anything, though I may be just looking in the wrong places All I have turned up so far on what is checked for the exhaust is : (no dates on a lot of the references I have found) EXHAUST SYSTEM The decibel level will be assessed at the discretion of the tester, other checks are: The exhaust mountings must be secure and not fouling any part of the rear suspension The exhaust must not be holed and free from leaks from both joints and box(es) Replacements units, other than bikes registered before 01.Jan.1985, must have the BSAU 193 stamp
I asked the mechanic at my local shop who does the MOT testing and he said they are not testing for cats. So he either does not know about it, or its not a requirement. Either way is fine
