Decisions, decisions!

  1. Money's tight as usual but might be able to release a little to spend on my darling 2012 Mutley S Touring. Problem is what should I spend the hard earned on next...?
The Scorpions are getting well squared off but still legal. New tyres can wait until the Spring.
So the two current contenders are
    • A visit to CJS for a remap to go with the full Leo Vince (expensive option)
    • An Ohlins semi-active suspension unit (not as expensive but can you feel the difference?)

So what do you reckon will give the biggest bang for my buck?

  2. Out of the two I'd go for the remap. I think the Ohlins is good enough (well, for my riding anyway) but you can't beat a nicely dialled in power house to put a grin on your face when you twist the throttle.........

Everyone has their own thoughts so go with what you can afford now - you'll only make a great bike even better! :upyeah:

  4. ... that way you're at least allowed to use the thing.

  5. Martyn,

I've had both done, and which is the best to go for if you only do one depends on where you feel your bike needs most improvement.

I hated the dive into corners and the tendency to try and run wide when pressing on.
So the SCU update made me a very happy man - in fact it made me decide to keep the bike and hence finally get round to the remap.

My bike's fuelling wasn't as bad as some, and I'd read rave reviews about the remap so I was maybe expecting too much?
Don't get me wrong - the bike is now smoother and more responsive, but it isn't the step change in character that the suspension was. Again, I may have expected too much, and I've also only ridden a few hundred miles in shitty conditions since I got it done, so I could well give a different opinion once we get some warm dry days and I can use the improvement to full effect.

    So my response is basically this;

Get both done if you can, but if money's tight and your fuelling isn't driving you mad go for the SCU first.

  6. I have also done both, and for me the remap was the bigger benefit but I had the Termi system so I was blown away by CJS's remap.

The ohlins upgrade is also a major benefit too and if you are able to afford both over time you won't be disappointed. I do keep flirting with upgrading to the 2013 bike but to be honest I am more than happy with my 2010 MTS, I have added an after market warranty just in case.

Either way I wouldn't have any other bike, it's just the Swiss army bike of all time!

  7. Thanks for your input guys.
The low speed running was a pain since I spent a lot of time around the 2500-3000 rpm mark. However it wasn't unrideable and like most minor irritations you tend to get used to it and ride round it. However, since fitting the Leo Vince and getting rid of the cat it seems to have improved it a bit and strengthened the mid range so maybe the remap won't make as dramatic a difference as it would do with a standard system. However, I've always wondered what a well sorted engine should feel like so I'm sorely tempted.

The dive at the front is noticeable when pressing on but as I ride solo and don't tend to ride like a loon (well, most of the time anyway!) maybe I won't feel the benefit of a suspension upgrade either. However, for the cost of the Ohlins unit I'm tempted to give it a try anyway, especially as I'll be doing the Swiss Alps with luggage this summer.
So, yes, I want them both but one will have to wait a while. Still not sure which but I suspect the lower cost of the Ohlins unit will win the day! :upyeah:

  8. My bike has a cjs remap but also an updated rear ohlins spring that's helped get rid of the dive, might be worth considering as a cheaper option to the ecu for now at least

  9. Decided to go for the remap first. So at the back end of April I rocked up at CJS for Chris to do the job.
The ride home afterwards was almost door to door motorway so I didn't notice much of a difference except for the fuel consumption. I was expecting a drop from the usual 145-150 mile range to low fuel light on (which I'd achieved on the way down) but managed 180 on the way home. Pleasant surprise. :)
However the first proper ride out over a mix of town, A and B roads really showed the difference the remap had made. Gone was the hesitancy, surging and general bad manners between 2-3 K revs. The fuelling is absolutely spot on. Riding round town the motor is creamy smooth (almost 4 cylinder like) and is now an absolute joy! But that's not the best bit!
There seems to be more power everywhere. Fitting the decat and Leo Vince made a big difference but the remap has now put it in a different league. I didn't particularly want or need more power but it came just as a consequence of getting the fuelling right. Wow! Talk about unleashing the beast. :Nailbiting: Highly recommended.

New PR4's fitted so next job is to sort out the suspension.
Before I dive in with a Ohlins SCU I was thinking of getting the suspension sorted out first by someone who knows what he/shes doing. Anyone recommend somebody round the Manchester area?

  10. Wholeheartedly concur re CJS. Spirited riding higher up the rev range is a joy, throttle response is linear in both directions and you get exactly what you dial in. The extra 16 ponies I got at the rear wheel with a torque increase across the range is a BIG bonus too

  11. Just get the SCU - I spent hours and hours fine tuning my settings until I was happy and if I was being paid to do this it would have amounted to a fair chunk of money. Then I fitted the SCU and found out that my "perfect" settings were nowhere near as good as the SCU's trickery.

Obviously a pro would get to a better baseline setup than me, and probably a lot faster, but I still think the SCU will give you a better overall experience.

  12. Majvs I have taken the plunge and am about to upgrade to the 2013 model so my ohlins scu will be available if you are still interested to upgrading?

  13. If he's not in the market yet rot can I have first dabs at it olz

  14. Rot, PM sent

  15. you keeping the termi though ?

  16. Hi Dave, yep, keeping Termi but won't be fitting it till after the EMM, will then get CJS to remap for me. Can't afford to do trip and remap so the EMM will be a bit quieter! Lol.

  17. fair play mate , i was about 2 euro a tank better than a 2010 bike with this eco friendly dual spark bike , it my opinion its worth the upgrade for the lights alone , they're very good . good stuff mate and only 5 weeks to go

  18. Hee hee hee! Part 2 of the master plan underway! Ohlins SCU now arrived and waiting to be fitted this weekend. Testing and update will follow when the current deluge has stopped. :(
